Also, while a printing press is fast, it's not fast like social media. So it takes a little bit of time for this to spread and be whipped up into a frenzy. So by the time we get to the 1600's the witch hunts have become a true gendercide.

But regardless, my initial argument is that Christianity's stranglehold worldwide was clenched by the printing press. Which is not to say that the printing press isn't turned towards different purposes once we have the enlightenment.
