Well, when an authoritarian entity like the Catholic Church stops going on crusades, resting easy is not something they can really do, because authoritarian grip has to be held at all times, particularly when the church itself is fracturing internally. Something like a printing press is taken up by such authoritarians to mass produce the culture, and to train people to hunt witches on their own. Kind of like social media.
