As for the Bowie spider situation, it does seem flippant. But this is usually a problem very specific to megadiverse taxa. A name can only be used once. At some point you run out of location names, distinctive characteristics, colours and even people to name them after. So you just name it after a song that you've been listening to during those long hours in the lab.

That's how you end up with wasps named after Lady Gaga.
