Thanks to those who answered the questions about kpop concert going that I posted a few days ago.
I read the responses with great interest.

Like Sara , I have never been to a kpop concert, and this has been the case for many of the reasons that Sara mentioned: money, work responsibilities, “adulting” in general. Unlike Sara, though, I feel torn about going.

As is obvious from my posting history, I love kpop, and I also love interacting here with other kpop fans. Yet I fear that at a live event I, as an older man, would be uncomfortably self conscious of my difference from the other younger female fans. I do note what Jill •-□ and Karen write about fans being friendly and welcoming, and I am also aware that fans are there to see the idols, not other members of the audience, but I can’t help feeling that I might all the same be painfully aware of my outlier status.

Even at a concert given by one of those girl groups that attract a lot of male fans, I worry that I would not feel at ease with the crowd, although for a reason different from that mentioned previously. Watching concert videos or fancams of groups like fromis_9 or Lovelyz, I have at times heard something of a frat boy note in the audience cheers and chants. I don’t think I would be at ease in that setting either.

On the other hand, as Malthea notes, Kpop concerts vary, so perhaps I shouldn’t allow worries based on watching some YouTubes harden into prejudices that cut me off from what could be wonderful experiences.

I’m also afraid that the experience of a live concert could be disappointing after years of kpopping via the edited, postproduced, and photoshopped internet. Although I’ve reconciled myself to lipsync and loud backtracks on music show performances, I’m not sure if I would be so accepting of these if I was at a “live” event. More generally, I wonder if the saying “Never meet your idols” was unwittingly coined as a warning to kpop fans.

Having said all that, I’m still feeling strong pangs of regret that I was not able to see VIVIZ when they were in Texas earlier this year.
Let’s finish with them performing “Untie” in San Antonio:
