Is their civilization good, just & worth preserving or is it violent, brutally unfair, & necessarily collapsing because of its own endless, senseless violence?

Nolan really, really seems to want it both ways, which I think is where a fascist reading of this film could come in. It's a film about how a present lack of decency has apparently spoiled a mythical past golden age, that seems pretty clearly to be an optimistic fabrication, but Odysseus laments that fabricated past anyway.
