I literally think some of this comes down to the fact that not everyone can (or even would) launch a pre-emptive strike. The IR *knew* that eventually another attack from the Israel/US coalition would be coming, but it is to their benefit that the whole world sees that they didn't start the violence.
But if you're a Trump minion, the only reason not to start a war is that you are weak. So they figure if Iran isn't starting wars, then clearly it's weak & will collapse the moment it is attacked.

Now, plans sometimes fall through (or are just bad), so "having a plan" is hardly a guarantee of success, but in terms of knowing what they will be able to endure & what they hope to achieve...the IR is far ahead here.
They have every incentive to make the most of this moment. This will not be the last time the US attacks Iran & Israel will never abandon its genocidal mission. Rolling over now would just leave Iran even more vulnerable later.

I'm watching an interview with Seyed Mohammad Marandi, a professor at University of Tehran & member of the Islamic Republic's delegation to the negotiations in Islamabad.
Nothing too exciting here, but it's pretty clear that the IR was expecting an attack from the US in 2026 & basically preparing for this exact scenario. This is why I think they will outlast the US & be able to come out ahead in the end. There is a fucking plan here, & they have known for a long time what they are up against.

I'm watching Ken Burns's Vietnam War doc & realizing the US military hasn't really changed. They don't learn.
Counting bodies & destruction is NOTHING. What objectives did you achieve? What did you take from the enemy? What did you get for your side?
War isn't won by the number of missiles used & people killed. It's about achieving objectives that allow you to thwart the enemy.
I don't know exactly how much the US military is dependent on AWS, but I'm sure the answer isn't 0%.

Somehow I missed seeing that a couple weeks ago Iran declared AWS, Google, and Microsoft data centers hosting U.S. defense workloads are legitimate military targets. They've been striking AWS data centers in the region, causing major outages.

I'm trying to unlearn how much I think about other people's feelings & reactions because it is TOO MUCH.
I think autistic women don't just lack the same privileges. I think the expectations placed on women & girls have an especially intense effect on autistic women because we already have to expend so much effort managing how other people perceive us, so we just take on the full load of emotional management for everyone. Because why not? We're required to think about it 24/7 anyway, right?

It really is interesting as an autistic woman looking at the autistic men in my family & seeing how differently our autistic tendencies/traits got channeled.
Part of me is envious of their "freedom".

The reason we can't legislate ourselves out of this nightmare is that our laws exist to *create* this nightmare.
At some point I think we have to admit that what the system *does* is what it is intended to do.
Our "legal" system makes the poor—especially the racialized poor—slaves & prisoners. People often wait months, even years, in jail before they ever face trial, losing everything & being cut off from friends & family despite being convicted of no crime.

Poverty is also "can do nothing about harassment by cops or the legal system."
Poverty is "everything you could do to help yourself or your community breaks some laws or regulations or is functionally impossible."
Poverty is "the State has extreme power over you, because you can't survive without the tiny pittance that is your disability check."

Every time I start to write like this, I start to worry about somehow "overstating" things or being "alarmist", but fuck no.

Financially, my family was at the bottom of the white "middle class", barely able to uphold the image.
There were times my parents barely managed to afford food for all of us. We went through some tough times.
You know what my middle-class ass did not have to deal with, despite that? Being dehumanized as a target for state violence. We weren't always considered the "right" kind of people, but we were firmly in the group: "people the police still speak to with a small amount of 'respect'".

The thing about the minesweepers comes from my ex-Navy spouse. He pays attention to exactly what equipment the US Navy has, how much it costs, how old it is, & how difficult it is to replace (they have a lot of ships & equipment that are very difficult to replace because they just stopped making any more of them a very long time ago).
Last year, the Trump admin decommissioned HALF of the US Navy's Avenger-class mine countermeasure ships. So there were 8. Now there are 4.

I do not think the US is prepared for how this is going to go.
I think we might just get stomped down by a country many folks here think of as "backwards" & believe to have far inferior military capabilities.
If Iran is laying mines using small boats, & the US has just 4 minesweeper ships, who is better equipped? Seems to me, the US can keep shooting those boats & Iran can just get more. But if Iran destroys their minesweepers, well, they're gone.

Iran appears to be using shortwave radio to send cyphered messages. It's an old school Soviet method of communication. And guess what? It works. None of it goes through a computer, so there is nothing to hack. It's inexpensive & easy to do, & you can just keep changing frequencies when your opponents start interfering with the one you're using.
All the fancy spy equipment the US has? Not meant to deal with that simple, low-tech tactic.

It's not magical, but "could I get that in writing?" can be surprisingly powerful.
You do have to be persistent & leverage documented communication as much as possible to get results.
Communicate over email if at all possible, & if you have a phone call or an in-person meeting about it, take notes & then send them in an email to all persons involved. Every single little convo you have about it, email the person & say "thanks for the talk, here's the content of our conversation."

Obviously being able to do this depends on a certain amount of job security.
But if you are fairly secure in your position, when you are told to do something shady at work, asking the company to put it in writing will often make them suddenly decide they don't actually need you to do that thing.
Obviously they have no problem writing "we want you to use AI." What they probably don't want to put in writing is "we are aware of the potential harm to our employees from AI use."

I suppose if you are being pressured to use AI at work, one thing you could do is send HR articles/studies on AI psychosis & ask "does [company name] accept liability for any mental harm that may occur from AI use?"
Before you touch any of the AI tools they want you to use, ask them to put in writing that the company is aware of the concerns about mental harm from AI use but is asking you to use it anyway. Ask to put a note in your employee file saying that you objected to using it.

Seriously, I don't even know how to process what it means that my ancestors came to the brand-new state of "Iowa" & settled on land there. They were squatters, joining a great crowd of people being sent out with promises of great prosperity to keep indigenous people from their homes & permanently wrest the land away from them. I would rather there not be atrocities in the world, but I will bear witness anyway, because that is the absolute least we can do for the victims & the survivors. We can refuse to let people be erased both in their past & in the present.

I don't know if I would be getting this quite so clearly if I couldn't look across the world at Palestine & at the murderous settler colonial nation that is a few steps behind us on the genocidal plan.
Being able to see the truth with my own eyes of what the violence of being a settler is cracked something open in my mind. The realization: oh, that's what it looked like. That's what my ancestors did so that I could "belong" to this stolen land.

US settler's children & their children's children may have quietly softened the memory of the things their parents had done, the things they were still doing, the things which have to be done to create, expand, & maintain colonialist rule.
But regardless of how it has been obscured now, it stretches the imagination to the breaking point to try to say that these participants had no idea at the time of what they were doing. Israeli settlers know what they are doing & do it anyway.

My ancestors weren't immigrants. They were settlers.

In 2016, there were a lot of people out there going "wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if Trump won" all the while trusting that it wouldn't *really* happen.
The shock some other people expressed when he won was hard for me to deal with. I was really scared by the idea of a Trump presidency, but when he won I found out that a great number of people had just mentally decided that he couldn't win. That unfounded belief was weird & upsetting to me.

I still believe that a factor in Trump getting elected the first time was people voting for him in "protest" thinking he would never win. I don't have the data to back that up, & I think we may never really know because how people vote & why is all self-report.
I'm pretty sure I know a couple people who voted for Trump that first time around thinking it was a joke or a way of registering disapproval for Clinton, but they've never quite come right out & told me that & most likely never will.

So yeah, when it comes to POC saying "white people, listen up," I think we should all perk up our ears & listen to what they are saying & think about how it relates to us.
And sometimes it won't really relate to us, so if you fucking see someone talking about a thing you never do, you don't need to chime in "I never do that thing." Just make a mental note that you may need to be on the lookout for that behavior & move the fuck on.

I don't have control over how other people respond to me, but I can try to make my disinterest in playing this game obvious.
It's not some great virtue or sacrifice either. People who center whiteness in their identity are people you should wish far away from you. Participation in "whiteness" comes with so many fucking privileges but it costs you everything that is you. It's a deal with the devil. Willingly participating in this particular club is like lying down to sleep in a viper's nest.

I personally try not to be perceived as "the right kind of white person" by people who do consider themselves the "right kind". I used to do the opposite because that's what you do to move up. You dress the "right way". You move, you speak, you behave in ways that will make you "successful" in various areas of your life.
And I'm here to tell you: don't. Don't seek membership in this club. You do not want it. It would be better for you if these people crossed the street when they see you coming.

Obviously with the above about piercings & "alternative" looks you could cite instances where that is NOT TRUE AT ALL. They are sometimes part of very aggressively "white" subcultures.
Different contexts get different results. But when I am presenting myself with short hair & a septum piercing, what I am NOT doing is performing "white femininity".
Which is also not to say that appearing "feminine" is morally bad. This just happens to be one potential way I can signal my refusal to participate.

Incidentally, I think there are ways to reduce white people lumping you in as a member of the White People Club without appropriating other cultures.
For example, piercings & other "alt" aspects of your appearance create barriers where you will not be welcome in certain White spaces, because you are not conforming. It doesn't fully exclude you—it doesn't delete your privileges—but it can be a way of signaling non-participation & saying "skip me with your shit."

Honestly, you cannot opt out of being perceived as "white" nor out of the fact that you have benefited from your "whiteness" but you absolutely can (& should) take whiteness out of your identity.
I consider myself white when I am perking up my ears to hear what racialized people have to say, but when it comes to the social club "White People", I am trying to make sure I'm not welcome. I do not claim membership, & I don't want its "special perks".

Someone in Eastern Europe has a different relationship with colonialism than Western Europe, not only because Western European nations are the primary beneficiaries of a number of centuries-old murderous & exploitative projects across the globe, but also Eastern Europeans really are only *conditionally* white, depending on where the "proper" white people feel like drawing the line in a given context.
I'm not asking you to ignore your context. I am saying your context deserves your attention.

At this point, both an Irish person & an English person would be treated as "white" in most generalized contexts.
One of them is from a people who were colonized, plundered, & genocided by people from the group the other comes from. So both have some participation in whiteness that requires their attention, but NO, those two people do NOT have the *same* relationship to colonialism.

We all also operate on different levels of "whiteness". A lot of people who are considered properly "white" in one context will in other contexts be targeted & excluded due to some characteristic that makes them not the "right" kind of "white".
Whiteness is a construct for global oppression, crafted over centuries. It's complicated. However, if you are prickling at the idea of "dealing with your relationship to colonialism", I would suggest maybe there is something there you need to look at.

I wasn't going to watch, but then I decided that if Trump had a stroke or announced war on Iran, I'd want to be watching in real time.
So I watched & what a waste of time that was. Exposure to 2 hours of that man talking is bad for my mental health. I think that's part of why I struggled to get to sleep last night.

I always heard people "pooh-pooh" the idea that there shouldn't be so many guns & so much violence in movies & TV, especially for kids, but these days I'm inclined to think that is an important point.
Mind you, I'm literally a horror movie enthusiast so it's not that I think violence needs to disappear, but seeing how people's attitudes towards doing violence to others seem to be shaped by media, I think media that encourages casual attitudes about violence can be very dangerous.

Purity culture created a lot of the worst aspects of my religious trauma. MY WHOLE LIFE was purity culture. Everything I did, every interaction I had before my mid 20s was shaped by it.
Would it be so bad to just let us survivors of religious trauma use a combination of words which really didn't get used much at all for anything before we coined it & started using it? Nobody was using it for much, we started using it & now apparently it's a popular term for something almost completely separate.

It's really frustrating having a term people like me use to describe the trauma that shaped us picked up & used in some vague & non-specific way for no particular reason.
If you Google the term, you'll see references to the meaning I am using. People can come up with another term for their annoyance at people who have opinions about what they should or shouldn't do.
Don't steal terms from trauma survivors. We're using those.

So, in my circles, the phrase "purity culture" refers to the harmful & abusive attitudes & behavior around sex & sexuality in religious communities (especially within evangelicalism).
I'm seeing discussion of Cory Doctorow's use of the term "purity culture" to mean something like people who are (supposedly) so obsessed with being perfectly ethical that they harass others and...I dunno...halt progress. I guess he's not the only one who uses it that way, but it's news to me.
