Manufacture your own doesn't mean exact same physical hardware. It means using the principles and ideas specified in the patent. So, basically these ideas are copyrighted. Knowing these ideas is allowed, but using them without a patent is not. Because in this case you would kind of violate the copyright. In the past knowing was not an issue because of human nature. This isn't true anymore after we've replicated the mathematical machine behind the brain.
