Susan Blackmore's essay is interesting in this context: https://www.susanblackmore.uk/chapters/dangerous-memes-or-what-the-pandorans-let-loose/

One problem might be the diet (source of energy) of modern corporations. Organisms whose diet has become overspecialized (koalas, pandas, etc.) are at a survival disadvantage, so perhaps complex memes with too narrow a diet also are at risk.

Some complex memes (e.g., Roman Catholic church) have a broad diet, getting energy from multiple sources, but today corporations and society more broadly have narrowed their diet/focus to one nutrient: money/profit. By focusing solely on money, they develop blind spots and become more vulnerable.
