The so called Internal Market has operated for long enough that it should have been possible to assess whether or not it has achieved improved patient care and financial effectiveness. I am not aware of any major study into this.
The days of the old Hospital Administrators are long gone. A cost benefit analysis into the changes in organisations and structures would be highly complex.
My view is that a study would struggle to show major gains.
