I realise it is a constant game of cat and mouse between ads and ad blockers.

After the initial euphoria I've been a little concerned that Polanski might be screwing up.
His YouTube podcast channel is a primary means for him to tell the public what he thinks (by proxy, by choosing who to interview and the topics they'll discuss).
The most recent several videos have been about topics that were "hot" during the Brexit debate and the culture wars that followed.
This is "looking backwards" in my opinion.
Gary Lineker, Femi Oluwole, Natasha Devon, Marina Purkiss, Mike Galsworthy ... as much as I think these are good-hearted people, they are associated with that era's struggles.
I think this will hamper him.
He needs to be talking to people who are associated with today's and tomorrow's issues.
When he spoke to Gary Stevenson, that was someone talking about today's and tomorrow's challenges. And guess what? .... that conversation has twice the views of the next most popular conversation on his channel. And the one with Femi is in the bottom 3 with a 1/20th of the views.

privacy *risk* is estimated differently - it takes into account the observed behaviours of an adversary - like the EU
the impact is also huge when the scaler is EU scale

Let's say we don't know what the right balance between medics, admins and managers is.
The regional structure of the NHS should be an opportunity for different regions to try different ideas.
So that we can learn what works and replicate, and also learn what doesn't work and so avoid.
It feels really unintelligent to impose one model across the entire NHS. Not only does one size rarely fit all, it is also inherently risky from the above "engineering" analysis.
A key lesson is that the larger an organisation, the more important it is to maintain its ability to "learn".
And the approach doesn't just apply to the balance between medics-admins-managers .. it can apply to other decisions eg procurement, commissioning GP services, use of pharmacies, solving the dentistry puzzle ...

... I still don't understand why genuine viable alternatives to US "big tech" have not emerged, nor been encouraged by governments around the world (except China).
1. There is no trade-secret knowledge required to make generic versions of Azure, AWS, YouTube, Google Docs, LinkedIn etc... indeed this mastodon is an example of that, and there is a long tail of independent small hosting providers, and open source tools eg for office productivity.
2. Perhaps none of the ventures has been allowed to grow to crucial mass, by hostile practices like takeovers or legal threats? I don't know.
3. Perhaps state-level support for digital sovereignty has been lobbied against and neutralised that way?
I don't know. It's a puzzle, and the barrier isn't technical know-how or availability of skills.
Back on topic - we need to outcompete things like LinkedIn with alternatives that have more transparent and open algorithmic accountability, imho.

But I was wondering... what would happen if the state monopoly on interest rates was removed?
Let the market decide. And let the market have many interest rates, not one per sector or even one annually.
Just as prices are generally "per contract".
Would this lead to a disaster? Would it help, and who would it help? Has it ever been tried?

I very quickly left a company that used the corporate laptops to monitor how many minutes you were away from the device at home.
No only is this (1) insane, it is (2) an invasion of privacy an disrespectful of humanity, and (3) doesn't actually result in more / better work, (4) causes people who have self-respect and the privileged ability to go elsewhere to leave, leaving the less good or less fortunate to stay, lowering the overall level of the business.
In short, middle management is generally - with very very very few exceptions - shit. I say this with 30 years experience across organisations large and small, public and private.
UPDATE - some staff bought those little USB dongles that simulate mouse movement to fool the spyware.

LLMs are here to stay.
Why?
Because lots and lots and lots of ordinary people who aren't experts will continue to use them - regardless of their accuracy or ability to reason.
Over the last few months whenever I've reached outside my bubble I'm surprised at how "normal" it is for every day folks to be using LLMs in all parts of their lives.
And that will drive further investment by big tech.
I think the only way to reduce usage is to convince the general public to see it as unethical - like dropping litter or smoking indoors. If cigarettes are anything to go by, that won't happen for decades.

we've provided ideas but they are dismissed
ideas such as
1. baseline transparency on rationale for moderation, disposable by the data subject - this is just GDPR
2. visible metrics on accounts which report a lot - to identify bad actors
3. independent "second opinion" appeal system where data subject can nominate alternative moderation
4. visible metrics on bias eg which instances shut down anti-genocide voices more than others
5. visible metrics on successful responses to admin tickets (to identify which ones ignore them, including formal GDPR requests)
... and on and on...
