I trained as a physicist. Like many other physicists, I hold economics somewhat in contempt, seeing it as closer to theology than to science.

This piece is a really good example of why. It acknowledges that its entire method is wrong, then blames the people who were right, and immediately retreats back into the method which produces wrong results. A wise person might think that if writing about dollars did not lead them to the truth, perhaps they should stop fucking writing about dollars. A fool would think that they are here to write about dollars, so that's what they'll do; whether or not they are right is incidental.

Having said that, not all economists. There are smarter economists than this. There are economists who base their work on empiricism and who see theory as something to extrapolate into rather than to retreat into. But this piece is not an example of that.
