the machismo distilled into a feeling to be experienced through a rather dull form and color. Through a gesture. Fascinated me. Was it art? I don't think so. I think it was the engineering of feelings using empathy. It has the intent of selling you a product that originated from someone else, and investor who started a business, found marketing people to come up with target market, perfume designers that found the combination of smells that will evoke that same feeling and came to the designer for a bottle to convey it through the container. So intent doesn't explain it.
İn short, an artist will make their art without a demand or appreciation. A designer intends to solve a defined problem (which may just be selling an item).
I appreciate the conversation you started and hope you go deeper into this topic and turn it into a book.

I heard about Design Semantics and started digging during school. My very vivid memory from 32 years ago is still how I measure the success of what I'm doing.
The professor walked in with a bottle of drakkar noir to the classroom. Asked us to take a look at it. The little bottle went through the classroom of 20+ people. He asked what it looks/feels like. The general response was "flashlight, remote, shaver, phone etc"
He asked us what the common theme is among those items. It obviously was the hand. He asked us to describe the hand (and its owner). A man. Because you grab it like it is an object that gives you power, makes you feel that manly man feeling. You wake up, grab it and splash some of it on yourself, get in your Maserati and go.
Then he said if you design a good product that already has the feeling (and purpose) in it the job of the advertiser is easy. if you don't THEY have to make it up. And he showed us the ad page he ripped from a magazine. I still get goosebumps remembering it.

I'm delighted to see you get into this topic since it is something that I've been thinking about for the last 35 years since as an industrial design student at a fine arts school. Being there instead of engineering school was my first clue. And I always described the difference between design and art as intent BUT exactly the opposite of your view. As a designer I have the intent to fix a problem through an object (or service) by making it easier to understand and use. That's intentional. What I describe as art is something that flows out of you. Doesn't have an intended audience. It just needs to come out. It is not necessarily trying to fix something but it is a refined punch of the feeling that the artist is already feeling intensely and cannot refrain from putting into another medium maybe to have a little relief from the intensity of the feeling.
But to me, a designer, a feeling is a tool that I can use to communicate. You need the empathy to anticipate the impact it will have on the user.

Still, unfortunately we need these assholes to see the issue and act on it. They need to think they discovered it. Once they do we may have a shot. Sickening but I don't see any other way out.
It's like the US and WWII. Did everything wrong until finally something right for the wrong reasons but then claimed the highest moral position. I'd hate to be a historian. Watching this shit happen over and over again knowing where it will end up.

If you have enough money to buy the biggest megaphone you can pass or block anything you want in this country. This was the first measure I zoomed in to understand local politics when I first became a citizen. It took me 2 mins to see who is who and doing what and yet people saw ads and believed that it would cause "closures of clinics" and "unnecessary and costly". Because those two companies making billions put $130m into the campaign and newsom acted like it is all fair since people choose that instead of enforcing proper standards for this low quality and overpriced "care". Btw fuck newsom. They'll bring him as the candidate and make us support that asshole just like they did with Biden. Always the worst option will be pushed down our throats. Lol Only 4 years as a citizen and already this frustrated.

there are so many examples of this. Unfortunately the justification is always survival no matter what. See the case of Reuters I recently came across when I received a note from ThompsonReuters to use one of my photos from 10 years ago and looked them up.

I used to have grade school kids in my neighborhood yell "Cheater!" at me on my 15 mile ride to work over Golden Gate bridge into the city. I'm 50 with multiple stents in my arteries and t1d. I'm grateful that someone invented e-bikes so I can actually avoid driving and get exercise within my limits.

my first time (visit and volunteer) at a local repair fair was yesterday. I fixed 4 table and floor lamps in 3 hours, met wonderful people and hopefully made the lamps useful and safe if not saved them from landfill. Made MY day!

I discuss this with family and friends a lot. The problem with this argument is the context. Imagine a competition between the academics and the football team of a University. If the competition is intellectual most likely academics will win but if they play football or I don't know, run or lift weights then athletes will win. These fascists are changing the game we're playing. It doesn't matter how smart you are. It didn't matter in Hungary, Russia, Turkey or many other countries. I moved to the US 8 and became a citizen 3 years ago. I've been trying to help fellow Americans see beyond this exceptionalism. If we don't acknowledge the threat and our weaknesses we'll lose just like them.
