Before watching this film, I kept hearing that it was about regret & that this is Nolan's mature contemplation on the subject.
It is not a mature contemplation of anything. Nolan put some Themes in there, but they don't develop into anything. There is neither insight nor emotional immediacy.
Per his usual style this film suggests ideas that Nolan doesn't actually want to go deep with & explore.
