I'm not nearly as into the series as I used to be once the franchise moved to PlayStation and I was a diehard Nintendo guy.
I did eventually play VII and VIII on PC (before Steam was a thing) and enjoyed them well enough. Other than dabbling in the MMOs (XI and XIV), I hadn't played a mainline FF game since then (but I kept buying them as aspirational purchases because I keep thinking I have more free time than I actually do).
Last year FFXV was put up for free on PlayStation Network for subscribers, so I gave it a shot and enjoyed it, but it took me so long to get through it (because of time constraints) that I've hesitated going through the back catalog to see what I've missed.
