We live in a significantly more complex society than we did when 14 year old boys were considered "men." Today a "man" who cannot read should be treated just like we treat niggers - 500 years ago, this attitude would have been considered ridiculous.
When things become more complex, people need to be more skilled in order to be considered adults. It is good and well that a simpler society treated people like adults at younger ages, but we do not live in that world anymore.
