here in Britain all the "local" news sites fill up their article lists with crimes, fires and accidents from *other regions* (such as a stabbing in Scotland appears in the news for Suffolk/Essex) - if there aren't enough in the local area - if you aren't good at geography (or happen to read sites from multiple regions and notice the duplicates) its very easy to assume there is far worse stuff happening locally than the reality..
