I've been putting together paperbacks of the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, mostly buying second hand as I spot them. At this point I will be disappointed if the edition I find of the final one, The Rise of Endymion, matches any of the other covers. 📚

I think that before anyone goes too far down the minimalism road, they've got to get off the consumerism road, as the first step. Yes, many people will have a bunch of stuff they can get rid of from their homes. But they've got to figure out why they've got an excess of stuff in the first place. Otherwise they're just going to end up making space that they refill with more stuff.
I'm quite minimalist, but not as an aesthetic. And definitely have more books than most minimalists!

My late father lived down the other end of England from me, but since he was from this area he liked to read the website of the local newspaper and even get their emails. Of course one of the main things they use to fill their site is reporting from the courts, and just on crime in general. So he was convinced I live in a crime-ridden hellhole. I don't. It's fine here.

None of our brains are. We didn't evolve to know about bad stuff happening to people even twenty miles away, never mind all over the world. And even that used to be quite abstract, in news stories. Now we can be in daily contact with people we have no business knowing even exist, and get to worry about them and their families and pets. This is such new territory and it's normal not to know how to deal with it.

I'm about to start a new novel draft tomorrow. It's a bit hard to count, as there's no universally accepted word count length for a novel, and I've got at least two trunked novels, and a bunch of novel length fanfics. But using say the Hugo award word count length for a novel (over 40k) and going just with non-fanfic ones that are fully completed, published, or contracted, I think this new one will be my 25th novel since 2006. 😱

It's also way hard to get them to not try to sell you some kind of bundled service. Which must be getting quite hard for them when fewer and fewer people want the phone or TV services, and just want the broadband.

It's such an ordeal. I do like it when firms offer the online chat thing. It can take longer, but it's less frustrating usually. And if you're doing something like cancelling a service, it's harder for them to go into full turbo-retentions mode.

I hadn't noticed any big issues with my stuff, but Virgin Media, to their credit, are quite proactive and monitor the performance of their kit and offer an engineer call if they detect issues, rather than wait for you to start noticing problems. The best part of that being you don't have to call their customer services line (shudder) so that's definitely good.

Broadband engineer has been - I was his first call of the day, which was great, as it means none of my sitting around being unable to settle to anything while waiting. Have a new router and all is buzzing along nicely so far. Luckily I don't have a gazillion devices to connect to the new hub. He said he's been to houses where they've got like 50 devices to reconnect after a hub replacement. 😩

In today's "seagulls being absolute menaces" news: Gull samples man's coffee, before stealing the mug and dropping it in the sea. (An actual china mug, not some paper thing.) Could argue the gull was justified, as the man had been installing anti bird spikes on nearby houses, before stopping off at a pub for lunch. 😉

Just finished A Song of Legends Lost by M.H. Ayinde. Epic sci-fantasy, first of the Invoker trilogy, and bloody hell the next one better be out soon, because I'm hooked! The 80th anniversary of VE Day is coming up. We should definitely make a big deal about it. A BIG DEAL. I was thinking about how this ridiculous state of affairs directly contradicts any stated intention that tariffs on imports are there to revive American manufacturing. If current or potential manufacturers in the US are going to increase their output they need to invest in building out their capacity. But who is going to risk borrowing or spending the money to do that when they could get the rug pulled out again at any moment? Proving that of course it's not about that revival.

I loved A Knight's Tale. The use of things like modern music help audiences understand what scenes are trying to convey, better than more period appropriate stuff would. It's like modern dress productions of opera, Shakespeare etc. You get a more nuanced understanding of the characters because you understand their clothes on a more granular level than with period clothes, where mostly it's just "rich or poor."

Finished reading Matter by Iain M. Banks yesterday. The first half was a bit of a slog, compared to the other Culture books I're read so far. But it picked up a lot in the second half. Now starting on The Quantum Thief - yes, the one I just picked up in Oxfam charity shop yesterday. Already read the first chapter, which is as weird as expected, but fun.

I just read The Death of Grass a couple of weeks ago. Not exactly a laugh a minute.
Have you read Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel? It's a little bit more hopeful than most post-apocalypse stuff.
A couple of other interesting ones I've read in the last couple of years:
Nod by Adrian Barnes.
And Then I Woke Up by Malcolm Devlin. Really interesting twist on zombie apocalypse type of story.

It's set in the UK and the main characters are middle class types, but some of them with an edge to them that comes of having been in the war. It nicely illustrates how things go bad first slowly, then all at once. And for all that the British characters think they won't panic and behave like "the Asiatics" of course this proves not to be the case.

Just a few days ago I read a book called The Death of Grass (or No Blade of Grass in the US) by John Christopher. It's from the 1950s and is about what happens when a plant virus wipes out all species of grass - which includes all the grains that provide most of humanity's food, and the grass that still fed most livestock back then. It's extremely bleak. Think Day of the Triffids meets Lord of the Flies.

So TikTok has gone dark in the US, even though Biden said he wouldn't enforce the ban, and their announcement says they hope to work with Trump to get it back up again. I'll bet any money they've already made a deal with him for at least a 90 day extension on finding a buyer, so he can come in tomorrow and be the Man Who Saved TikTok.

You can't buy the hard won experience parties build up over decades of campaigning at local levels to get MPs elected. de Hevesy, who had Jewish grandparents, later had to flee Copenhagen, but after the war, he returned to his lab, to find the solution undisturbed on the shelf. He precipitated the gold out of the acid and sent the gold to Stockholm, where the Nobel Society then recast the medals using the recovered gold and returned them to the two laureates.

There are lots of ways to resist evil, including being intellectually kickass, like George de Hevesy, a Hungarian radiochemist, working in Denmark prior to WW2. German scientists and opponents of the Nazis, Max von Laue and James Franck sent their Nobel Prize medals to Denmark to keep them from being taken by the Nazis. When Denmark fell, de Hevesy dissolved the medals in acid and left the resulting solution on a shelf in his lab at the Nihls Bohr Institute. 1/2

A bit of random knitting practice with some scrap yarn turned into a super useful item I use most days - a wristband that stops my Fitbit pressing on the hard surface of my laptop and digging into my wrist.

I commented on the video, but it bears repeating - why are parked cars invisible? That footage from a fire department showing their difficulty getting around "narrow" streets, when the problem was clearly parked cars nearly made my head explode. Parked cars are treated like some natural phenomenon that you just have to work around.

Those are fascinating numbers. It's striking how close Conservative voters are aligned with Labour and the population in general on most of the questions, and Reform are the outliers. So why do so many of the Tory party leadership insist on pandering to those people who are now voting Reform not Tory and probably never coming back? Why won't they put in the work of getting out and getting new voters? If Cameron had done that instead of pandering to UKIP we wouldn't be in this mess.

The stuff people will complain about! God forbid your child learn things about the world as they go about their day. It's not like that's their entire job or something. 🙄
Some people seem to think life should be like a carefully planned school curriculum. It's not like that. Information comes at kids randomly, chaotically. All parents can do is help them make sense of it.

At my local pool they're refurbishing the changing rooms. The contractors working on it are all blokes, so the two changing rooms are temporarily swapped, so the women are using the men's and vice versa, so the contractors can work in the women's changing room during normal opening hours.
The facilities are basically the same except that the men's has a couple of urinals in the toilet area. Apparently a lady complained cos she had to explain what urinals are to her daughter. 🙄

Do not seize the day. This will startle the day and may cause it to become aggressive and give you a nasty bite.
