I mean, a lot of open source projects run on GitHub, which is proprietary with proprietary build infrastructure.

I understand (and respect, admire, appreciate, and support) the deeper commitment to OSS that some folks have.

I think one solution is to have a plugin architecture with a downstream project for the proprietary parts. However, if it is to be treated as a first-party supported plugin, then it would likely still be part of the main builds.
