A quick post about why tail latency matters in large-scale distributed systems:
"There’s a lot to like about the trimmed mean and friends, but cutting off the right tail will cause you to miss effects where that tail is very important, and may become dominant depending on how clients call your service.

Minification is both about performance and about obfuscation, right? So there's some benefit beyond the transfer or storage impact.
Do you recommend gzipping without minifying? Minifying without gzipping? Something else?

OSS project kyle-client is a client library compatible with a standard wire protocol, supported by two popular server implementations, kyle (oss) and davis (proprietary.)
Options seem to be:
1. kyle-client only tests against kyle
2. kyle-client considers them both fully supported (tests both in CI)
3. kyle-client tests against kyle, tries to support davis on a best-effort basis
Is your answer different if davis is proprietary, BUSL, or AGPL?

If you hadn't gotten a replacement in the meantime, then it's strictly better than what you had. But if you already have a better replacement, then it doesn't matter.
By the way, related to your other question, do you consider AGPL sufficiently open source that you'd be comfortable providing first-party support for it?

I mean, a lot of open source projects run on GitHub, which is proprietary with proprietary build infrastructure.
I understand (and respect, admire, appreciate, and support) the deeper commitment to OSS that some folks have.
I think one solution is to have a plugin architecture with a downstream project for the proprietary parts. However, if it is to be treated as a first-party supported plugin, then it would likely still be part of the main builds.

Yeah that's fine with me, especially if it's an optional dependency. Like, a client library runs against Valkey and Redis, I'm not going to use the latter but I understand why the test suite should include it and my changes shouldn't break that functionality

They're a pretty great "low code" tool, though. The longevity of spreadsheets is very impressive. Useful for whipping up small things when I don't want to deal with managing Python dependencies with Jupyter. Visual and interactive programming interfaces are underrated imo

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't give preference to projects with more stars, there's a social proof element to it, but I agree that it's a dumb metric. It's also just super prominent and there's not that much to go off of when selecting a project. Otherwise, I look at the readme and docs.
Biggest factor for me is how I come to know the project. Often someone mentions it and if they've used it then it seems more legit to me.
I should probably pay more attention tbh

My main complaints with the Change, Technically podcast are:
1. It's so well-researched and cited that I'm in for lots of paper reading 😅
2. I like listening to podcasts when walking, but I want to pause and take notes every few minutes when my mind is blown 🤯
3. I feel like I want to listen to each episode at least twice 🙌

Some web sites seem to conflate location, language, and currency preferences.
While certainly not common, it's possible that you're a French-speaking person who happens to be in the United States and you're trying to use an Australian credit card, thus paying in AUD.
Assuming that being in the US means that you want to use USD and English makes for a reasonable default, but please allow people to change each independently!
