I've now kept my little boutique freelance business operating for 22 years. Over 18% of small businesses fail within the 1st year of existence. In the first 5 years, that number jumps to 50%. These numbers are arguable. It appears that each snippet of research has differing results, so this is a subjective number. But it still shows the difficulty.
