Yes, this is the abiding issue with protest - how do you protest (especially if disruptive, to get coverage & profile) while not alienating the more passive support for the issue.... I think climate protestors have concluded that the passive supporters are no real help & they need to galvanise public opinion differently, but as you suggest that might be a high risk political strategy
