I've heard a lot of people say you can turn KDE into GNOME, but I haven't had a ton of luck with that. You can make an approximation, but the Overview doesn't have a Launchpad clone and there's no way to make an icons-only task manager that only appears in the overview. The KDE overview is nice, but it's not a one-for-one recreation of GNOME.
I dunno, I think it wouldn't hurt if they added a few more options, but I do really appreciate how slimmed down GNOME is. Going into the Cinnamon or KDE settings honestly gives me a headache and gets overwhelming. I think there's a lot of value in having a core experience and just refining that experience instead of requiring users to fine-tune everything. Fundamentally changing the core experience, like pulling the dock out of the overview or adding desktop icons, should probably just necessitate using a different, non-minimalist as fuck DE.
And that's kind of more of the core issue. There needs to be a way to install multiple DE's on a system without them stepping over each other. Every display manager under the sun lets you pick which desktop you're going to boot into, so I don't understand why every DE ever has to bicker with each other so much if they're installed on the same system instead of just letting people pick what they want for their session.
Why can't I just have a basic ass Fedora workstation that comes preloaded with both KDE and GNOME? I shouldn't need to literally grab a different flavor of a distro in order to pick my DE. It's dumb. I don't really think it's GNOME's fault that it lacks options for the people who don't want to use it, it just shouldn't be shoved down people's throats if they want a more feature-rich DE.
