how many people on here regularly use vim, and actually use its commands?
Examples:
- ":r !date" or ":r !echo hi" to insert a date (or other command) into the open file at the cursor
- ":w !python" or ":w !bash" to run the current buffer through python/bash (or any other command)
- ":%!jq" or ":%!sort" to take the entire file's contents and pipe it into an external command like jq or sort
etc. I find it really useful at times but it seems like few people use it, let alone the commands!

(I know this requires some way to run the POC as normal user, and that not every kernel build and device has the necessary exploitable bits, but it will still be an available way that you can try; I do suggest trying it simply to see if it works, wouldn't be the first time an (embedded or otherwise) device has weird libraries, oversized kernel builds, and bad protection past the frontend)

Understated opportunity: CopyFail means we get to jailbreak a whole new generation of locked down Linux devices.
Ever wanted root access on your router, phone, (tv/portable/etc) media player, washing machine, Jumbo jet, newag train, etc?
If you find a way to run the copyfail POC through somewhere, you'll be root!
Just make sure to try this before the next update gets installed on the device :dragon_sip:

I'm also starting to get very tired of this extremely selective "accepted money from evil people" rhetoric.
Like, do you want big tech's obscene wealth to actually leak out into opensource projects or not?
Because nothing would please the shareholders more than those companies halting their donation programs.
I'm starting to get so incredibly tired of social mass hysteria cycles on this platform, you're not going to solve anything by angrily kicking the shins of those who are on your side

I wonder how many of the people who are complaining about Blender's funding choices, have literally ever, donated literally anything, to literally any opensource project out there.
Because statistically speaking, very few of you did.

I do not see AI being mentioned here. Don't worry, it's a pretty resilient company in that regard; If all those other big tech companies didn't make it shit, I doubt Anthropic would do it

I'll be honest, it's hard to be nuanced in 500 characters, but I feel like I have good reasons for these posts, I'm not just making shit up, and I'm extremely bothered by the slanderously wrong takes and personification for the sake winning, and a lack of nuanced discourse about this important matter. It seems to be a lot of dunking and generic undirected hate instead of articulate constructive feedback to not just those companies but also lawmakers.

2026-04-13 18:49:33 UTC

DRAM consumption is definitely up! but the reason the PRICES are up is because they purposely let the prices escalate. They do this every decade or so, which is why I think the article is relevant, as much as that I also acknowledge hardware consumption is up, and also acknowledge that Sam Altman did a really dirty thing by buying up the wafer supply (and IMHO should be sued for it, this shit needs to be banned), but that's again not 'AI' but bad actors.

2026-04-13 18:47:32 UTC

- reply

the training data thing is actually interesting because, from what I've seen, even those big tech companies have set up their AI so they can pull out the layers trained on 'stolen data' at any time. but they don't because then they'd be 'left behind' and 'can't compete'. Lawmakers need to be clear and actually ban it, I feel like they could fix the whole problem overnight if they did that and I'm not even joking.

2026-04-13 18:45:48 UTC

- reply

People talk about AI like it's an entity, people don't say "this specific datacenter is in a bad place" or "this person has done something bad using AI", no, people say "AI did this", which is personification of the thing they were also explicitly claiming not to be a person, which makes it hard to argue with in good faith because it has an inherent dissonance that is hard to breach without being grouped with big techbros. We need to hold people accountable.

I appreciate your calm tone, you don't annoy me. .. I hope it's okay if I use a few posts for replies because I only have 500 characters per post.
I don't think "most" datacenters are in bad places. It does happen sometimes and I wish they didn't, and I wish there was more attention for that, because it's unnecessary; the DC I work at LOWERED the local water usage and is in an ideal grid location, usually they explicitly plan for that, they don't hate people.

"AI uses infinite power" actually just the tumbledryers in the USA combined use more, and that's truly wasted power because clothes racks use nothing. Bitcoin also uses like double.
"AI does bad things" AI isn't a person. Why not hold people accountable?
"AI uses stolen training data" Some do yes! PLEASE say that instead of 'AI bad' because it doesn't land when you do that!

and just to be clear, everyone is entitled to their own opinions on this, I'm not here to change your mind.
But if you hate and push off the subject as a whole, you also step out of the constructive debate to form and improve this tech away from a direction you don't want and towards something you do.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, hating AI is like hating crime. you're not going to lower the prevalence of crime that way. we need tangible and real solutions

2026-03-27 09:24:53 UTC

I think I'm just going to say it.
Fediverse has a strong negative echochamber about AI. And I get it, there are many issues I think the industry needs to address.
But there are also many many people out there, big and small, on all sorts of projects, open and closed, that are successfully using it to do good work.
I think it's time to let go of the "all or nothing" bandwagon stances on AI. To exert control we need to condemn the actual issues; https://mastodon.derg.nz/@anthropy/114975700920581718

I still can't even that my now nearly 80 year old mom has been on Fedora on a thinkpad e520 (2011) for a decade and it all just works.
I checked her laptop just now and it's fully up to date on fedora 43, so she's done like 20 version upgrades autonomously too. The battery has degraded a little but the whole thing still works fine and she's very happy with it.
This is how things should be, this is peak computing tbh.

my brief nuanced take on Matrix:
Bad:
- Security-wise they should stop ignoring issues
- Onboarding is a mess.
- "deprecated" is a poor excuse
- even Element deserves more love and fixes and is totally salvageable
Good:
- It's the ONLY platform with all the important parts in its core spec (E2EE, Federation, History, fedi voice/video calls, etc)
- It's the ONLY platform that actually handles giant end to end encrypted rooms, larger than even Signal's.
We can make it work if we believe in it.

2026-02-23 12:19:51 UTC

- reply

And this doesn't just go for Matrix, either.
If you're memeing about Mastodon's lack of custom emoji you better have posted in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/4106
If you're memeing about LibreOffice breaking your professor's .docx formatting, you better have posted in https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131304
and there are so many more examples.
IMHO before you write a meme about something opensource and freely provided to you not working, you're required to first donate 10$+ to the project you're about to slander tbh.

2026-02-23 11:50:58 UTC

- reply

since this post is apparently really upsetting to people, let me nuance it a bit:
Yes, everything can improve, and we should do so! But you're not going to improve anything by posting semi-slanderous memes about it.
If I saw as much +1's and thumbs ups and donations and comments on the actual bugs as the amount of people posting memes here the world would legitimately be a better place, and I legitimately don't think 95% of the people here realize this. It's extremely frustrating to watch tbh.

2026-02-23 11:10:50 UTC

why is it a meme that people failing to properly use end to end encryption is somehow matrix's fault, even if it's not even about matrix, rather than the skill issue it actually is :woozy_ie:
at this point you might as well just say 'thanks obama'

2026-02-16 20:58:18 UTC

hot fucking take: AI isn't your problem. LLMs aren't your problem. ML isn't your problem.
Technology never is.
People are. Greedy people. Shareholders. Companies with zero moral concept.
These technologies are used in many invisible places to improve YOUR life too, from the weather prediction, to democratizing medicine and testing thereof, to advancing science, to making games easier to render.
Nobody needed to scrape the entire fucking internet for it either. It fucking sucks they ruined it

hm, well if the Matrix peoples can get some tangible real world examples to debug with perhaps they could fix it.
I do think that most (public) group chats should just be left decrypted though. I feel like that would solve a lot of the key federation issues, and there's no real reason to have these encrypted as they're essentially public anyway.

2026-02-09 21:25:27 UTC

once in a while I see the 'unable to decrypt message' matrix meme come by and I can't help but wonder
how
I've used Matrix for years and the only times I've seen it is:
1) when logging in without entering the end to end encryption password or alternatively approving the login from another device
2) using a wonky client that doesn't support E2EE in an encrypted groupchat (and arguably there's no reason to encrypt groupchats to begin with)
it just kinda sounds like a skill issue? ngl

I came across an article that more or less said 'get higher Cat ethernet cables for more speed!'
But the reality is more nuanced.
1) Cat is just a rating for 'capable of xxx mhz'. It doesn't say anything about the material. Copper > CCA.
2) Many 'Gamer Cat7+' cables are not certified; essentially fake.
3) A *good* Cat5e cable is capable of 1gbit at 100(!) meters and maybe 10gbit often up to 30-40 meters.
4) Consider EMI; Don't ziptie your Ethernet to your Power cabling, that'll always suck.

I really appreciate how well KDE Plasma does as tiling window manager when you get the hang of how it does it.
I feel like almost nobody knows this is even an option, so:
- press SUPER (win key) + T
- you'll see the panes that you can divvy your screen up into. make panels as you please.
- grab a window by pressing super + mouse key (you can press anywhere on the window for this, not just the titlebar)
- hold SHIFT to see the panels you defined before (with super+T)

I would echo this sentiment, for most things it is objectively better than Windows these days.
but as much as I hate to admit it, having e.g the right creative tools available is important too, and if you want truly everyone to switch, it does mean that some people have to sacrifice some comfort, tools, and even hardware
That said, I definitely think it's worth it to still do it, because in the end, if everyone switches we'll get an open ecosystem that'll bring that all back and more

Today earth will perform a rolling reboot to update to the 2026 release.
This may lead to asynchronous new year messages as we cycle through each node in the cluster (colloquially called "time zones"); do not fret, everyone is still approximately in sync.

mastodon feature proposal: because implementing emoji reactions is hard or something, add a 'favorite lvl2', so that 'favorite' can serve as its current 'I read it and didn't hate it' signal, and we can also send a bit of extra dopamine to comment authors when we did actually like the thing but not enough to boost it

pro tip: a Homelab and Selfhosted infra are two different things.
If you use your #homelab for #selfhosting your personal stuff, one of two things happens:
- you can no longer use your homelab as homelab and for experimentation
- your selfhosted infra is constantly offfline
Selfhosted infra should be seen as a PRODUCTION environment, which homelabs are not.
It should have automated backups, and ideally receive automated updates for security; you should avoid touching it as much as possible.

So if you’re wired for Impact, you have to hack the system.
Personally I've found two things work for me:
- Daily "Clear the Runway"; Do minimum viable work just to remove friction (no dishes = can't cook). Lean into small wins (dishwasher LITERALLY takes 1 min). The goal isn't joy, but freedom for your future self.
- Periodic "Quests"; Save your energy for the big deep-clean resets. That’s where the visible 'Before & After' contrast exists, and you can finally get a real dopamine payout.

2025-12-12 20:07:18 UTC

- reply

I’ve been thinking some more about this all to try and find a possible solution.
Then I realized some people actually DO get dopamine from maintenance. They find peace in "order". For them, the act of keeping things tidy is its own reward.
But for many people (ADHD perhaps?) We run on "Impact." We need a visible delta, a clear Before and After. Maintenance feels like a void because even if you do it perfectly, the result is just... neutral. We are wired for the adventure, not the status quo.

2025-12-12 17:30:34 UTC

I keep thinking about that Rick & Morty psych quote. And I realize there's actually more to it.
It’s not just that maintenance is boring; it’s an infinite task with diminishing returns.
The better you do it, the less visible the result. It feels like a tax on the time you could be spending on actual living.
We let things get bad not for drama, but because that’s the only time the effort feels proportional to the impact.
The struggle is doing work where the best outcome is that nothing happens

I also want to address the Renewables elephant
I’m a huge believer in solar/wind. It’s exciting how fast they’re growing. My home batteries + panels almost get me off-grid... in the summer. But not winter.
This is where Nuclear makes sense.
While solar suits homes, heavy industry less so, and e.g steel/cement needs massive constant power AND high heat.
Nuclear generates that heat directly, cleanly bridging the gap and handling the heavy lifting so renewables can handle the rest

Some nuance to add:
- Gen 4 reactors massively reduce old nuclear waste volume & life; By recycling spent fuel, we can extract the remaining energy and 'burn' the long-lived elements. This shrinks the waste pile and drops storage time from 100,000 years to ~300
- That said, reprocessing is complex/costly, but it unlocks massive energy reserves we've already mined, reducing the need for new mining
- Unregulated coal ash actually releases radioactive material which nuclear plants do not.

2025-12-12 13:04:37 UTC

I ranted some thoughts on nuclear power in a group chat, that I think are also important to share here
I'm hoping that I can get in touch with some 'anti nuclear' folk so I can get their version of the story, because I think that there are a lot of common misconceptions about modern nuclear that don't have to be there, such as how with gen 4 reactors waste is hardly an issue and you can even USE the waste of older reactors, and coal plants objectively are more radioactive than any nuclear plant

Dear #Linux power users:
I know it feels weird, but I do recommend using desktop apps like Discover to update your desktop system rather than running apt/dnf/etc manually
Why?
- Discover etc actually update your Flatpaks and Snaps too, apt/dnf/etc don't do this, and this actually seems like a widespread issue somehow
- using apt/dnf/etc directly (usually) directly overwrites system files, which can cause e.g KDE and other C++ applications to become unstable. Only do this right before a reboot

(both the KDE and Gnome login screen allow you to pick which DE you want to use actually, you can totally install them side by side, though you have to do so BEFORE logging in, because the lockscreen doesn't allow you to do so.)

but that all said; I understand people have preferences, and if their preferences is less bells and whistles, so be it, that's a valid choice.
I just wish Gnome would 1) not be used as default in many distros and workplaces that implement it (gLinux at Google is a pain in the ass sometimes), and 2) would literally allow for any configuration at all without having to install a billion plugins that then break stuff and they then snobbishly suggest you to just turn off the plugins.

2025-11-21 19:44:09 UTC

there's actually no menu bar in KDE. There's just panels and widgets. You can make it the way you want
And that's kind of one big reason why I personally like KDE; sure it has bells and whistles, but you can literally turn it into Gnome if you prefer, hell you can even turn it into a smartphone-centered touch DE.
I dislike Gnome because they purposely REMOVE options for no other reason than being opinionated. It would not hurt their goals any tiny bit if they just allowed more toggles 🤷

2025-11-21 19:14:12 UTC

- reply

my problem with gnome is that they have about as much choice as apple when it comes to anything, it sometimes feels like they aspire to be ios or whatever, they even removed desktop icons and refuse to have a toggle for it, you have to install a plugin.
which some people may like, and some people will not. If they allowed people to choose, I'm sure there would be less salty responses, but alas, they like salt it seems.

the best thing about hosting your own server, is watching other social media platforms (and also fedi servers) catch on fire and explode over silly avoidable drama, while you don't even have to try to keep whatever you don't like out of your domain.
#Selfhosting is super easy. In fact I'd say the hardest part is to *not* touch it. You should put it somewhere on some device you can also avoid touching. Only do updates (and preferably automate those), then your server is basically indestructible.
