Apart from multiplying network traffic, moving on without a shared way to transmit metadata means everybody will implement a different system, and app developers will have to work on supporting all of them, or incur on the wrath of users. Remember app developers always bear that cross: every little malfunction, every glitch caused by malformed data in a feed will lead to a bad review for the app or an angry email to the developer.
