Now, being an actual left winger, it doesn't compute for me that a cult leader is more desirable than a disassociative hive mentality, or vice versa.

To me it's all idiotic, remarkably insentient. All people in a malfunctioning mental state. But the electorate, one side likes a cult, the other doesn't like its own hive mentality. The electorate is not the party.

Gotta break the habits of narcissistic institutions.
