True in Germany too.

In USA/Canadia a medical degree is technically a doctoral-level degree since you need a degree to enter.
Everywhere else its an undergraduate degree. (MBMCh) and you need to defend a thesis to be recognized in academia.
But social norms hark back to before universities.

In UK surgeons are still called Mr/Ms from when they weren't university trained.
