There was a plan a decade ago to build an off-shore HVDC ring main round GB to connect wind and solar, with spurs up each estuary to feed the cities and towns. Plus connecting to current and future international interconnects that run to Ireland and the continent. Yes it's expensive but it would be a great investment.
