self-hosting can be many things, including your own VPS I think. Thing is it is not a service operated by someone else. Best yes is to start just running stuff on the home network for internal use, and once you have about 5 Pi's then you migrate to a device running Docker, and then you worry about DynDNS and NginxPM etc ;-)
