Some nuance to add:
- Gen 4 reactors massively reduce old nuclear waste volume & life; By recycling spent fuel, we can extract the remaining energy and 'burn' the long-lived elements. This shrinks the waste pile and drops storage time from 100,000 years to ~300
- That said, reprocessing is complex/costly, but it unlocks massive energy reserves we've already mined, reducing the need for new mining
- Unregulated coal ash actually releases radioactive material which nuclear plants do not.
