When we found out, we dug around and found a long interview/forum/q&a thing the local League of Women Voters put together for all the candidates and watched it.
The primary was triggered because 3 people are running in the mayor race as well as our ward so the rules are they had a primary to narrow it down to two, apparently, even though they are nonpartisan seats.
