Yesterday was a tough day losing our cat, but today is my 20th wedding anniversary and my wife and I are excited to go out for our traditional Thai food without any kids tonight. 🙂
Some people throw big parties at 20, but we just do what we've always done almost every year instead because it's simpler and cheaper and doesn't involve any other people. 😂

Pushed #TapestryApp 1.9 to the App Store yesterday. Mostly a lot of bug fixes including an important iCloud syncing fix if you've been having troubles.

There are so many annoying limits and throttles when dealing with iCloud/CloudKit. Now I ran into one where the subscriptions that let you know when content changed are also throttled and limited. From what I'm reading, I might be in push-notification-jail for 24 hours now because I triggered a ton of changes during a test.
Makes it a tad hard to know when I broke something vs. when iCloud just decides to stop sending me stuff for a while.

Now I've installed Tahoe 26.4 and I can't even seem to launch in the simulator *at all*.
It's been stuck like this for about 5 minutes now. Just spinning. Doing nothing.

but from what other people have said, every power company around is different. Some have strict limits. Some won't even pay you for power so on those you'd really need a battery system to make it worthwhile. Some pay you back with real money. Some pay with credits. Most don't do a 1:1 thing where the credit == real cost of electric. So that one is a big win for us here - our power company credits are worth the same amount as the actual price they charge for power.

I don't recall any rule here about how many, although realistically the power company doesn't pay out cash money (at least not for a home install), but they pay out 1:1 credits (here anyway). So installing more than the power you use would just sort of be making free power for the power company because you can't turn those credits into real money - but they apply toward your bill and they bank them so over-generation in summer/sunny days apply to winter/cloudy days.

it's possible this array is massively oversized... I'm not really sure. Although we have electric heat now (and of course electric A/C in summer). Also electric clothes dryer. At some point I'd like to get electric water heater and kitchen stove, too, which would complete the set and I can get rid of the gas tank we have finally.

Sweet - we got logged into the solar tracker thingy. So far it says we've generated 17.46 kWh in under 3 hours. I have nothing to compare this with, but seems good considering it's so cloudy.
So far the "equivalent trees planted" is 0. (Doh...)

Okay not really... but... I mean... even right now on a cloudy day, we're feeding power BACK into the system right now. Essentially everything in my house is now running for free.
(Of course, it's not a very cold day so the electric heat isn't running right now. I'm sure that'll change the equation a bit. 😛)

I took a closer look at the meter and I realized it toggled between a couple of different states. So I went back out and one of the states that was showing all zeros before is showing a 1 now. I think it's already generated 1kWh.
(I should also note it's kind of dark and cloudy right now.)

Rooftop solar update: IT'S FINALLY ON!
Downside is, because everything is messed up about this install with things being done in the wrong order, they don't yet have the device hooked up/configured that lets us actually SEE the production. So here we are... after all this time... producing power. Maybe. I can't even tell. lol

Tooth extracted. It was highly unpleasant. He had trouble numbing me - which I warned him about. He put in the first dose and waited. Came back and put in an extra dose because I had told him I'm hard to numb and I still felt the needle the second time so then he's like, "welp... let's try a different one!" So I got numbed a third time with a different drug.
Even after all that, I still felt some sharpness during the procedure - especially right at the end - but at least that part was quick.

Walmart has something like $650 BILLION in revenue/year. There are around 5,500 stores (ballpark guess) so the average store brings in $320k-ish of revenue per day which is hard to fathom by itself.
I imagine some stores bring in way more than others - over a decade ago I had heard our local store could hit $1mil per day but maybe they were just talking about Black Friday?
Anyway, the amount of money flowing today JUST THROUGH WALMART is mind-blowing.
I'm staying home.

If you're not an old like me, you might not know this, but computers used to feel snappy - you clicked on a thing and it was immediately on the screen or moved or the button appeared pressed in on the next screen update. There weren't animations on every single hover, click, open, close, drag, etc.
Everything felt basically instant and when it didn't and there was a hang or lag, you knew the computer was doing something hard. It was working on it. It was trying its best.

Woke up with my ring finger and hand tingling a bit and in a weird panic state. I've had that happen before where my brain latches on to the source of the tingling as my wedding band pinching my finger or something so I'll slip it off a bit until the brain settles down.
Except today I couldn't get the ring off. And hooo boy did my brain start freaking out.
Normally I can slip my ring off and sometimes I do that while thinking or even watching TV - just moving it past the knuckle and back.

When we found out, we dug around and found a long interview/forum/q&a thing the local League of Women Voters put together for all the candidates and watched it.
The primary was triggered because 3 people are running in the mayor race as well as our ward so the rules are they had a primary to narrow it down to two, apparently, even though they are nonpartisan seats.

A few days ago we found out by accident that there's a primary election happening today in my city!
We had noticed campaign signs appearing a few weeks ago, but just figured it was the whole, "people are campaigning way too early" thing.
This is the danger of being hyper-online but not really hooked into anything local!
Neither of us spend any time on Facebook, we don't have a newspaper sub, and things like Mastodon/Reddit/YouTube/etc are all global.
It's way too easy to miss local stuff.

Sometimes I think it'd be fun to pickup a (very cheap) little PC to try using as a Linux desktop on weekends just to have something different to play with occasionally.
I only very briefly tried Linux as a desktop machine back in the early 2000s but never seriously. Once I got a Titanium PowerBook I never looked back, tbh.

I've often thought about what kind of stuff I'd buy if I could afford it and mostly I think I'd want services, tbh.
Probably, depending on wealth level, there'd be a lot of upgrades I'd want (house things, car things, tech things, etc), but if the wealth was stable I think I'd want a bunch of services.
Stuff like, physical therapy, massages, a physical trainer, house cleaner, yard worker, and cook/nutritionist that gets and makes all the food and ignores my request for Twinkies and ice cream.

The roof shape and location of some of the chimney/vent things apparently made it difficult to have a nice symmetrical layout, but hey... free energy! (Eventually... when they get wired up and approved... whenever that happens.)

Superman was Terrific. I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously and everyone clearly had a lot of fun making it. Kyrpto was a huge hit - the kids loved him! I've not seen many of the last few Superman movies, but this one felt Super fun and fresh to me with some interesting twists on the usual story beats and characters. Everyone finished the movie with a smile.

I did not expect Thunderbolts* to be this good. Wow! Easily one of the best Marvel movies in like... maybe 10 years?! It builds on a bunch of past stuff from the last few lackluster films while growing into something deeper than a "superheroes beat up the bad guy" special effects spectacle. In fact, beating folks up almost never worked out for them in this one! It felt like a much needed tweak and improvement to the somewhat stale MCU formula and I hope they can hang onto it.

Just got the first electric bill that entirely covers the time period after we installed the new heat pump. According to the utility company, the average outdoor temp this billing cycle was exactly the same as the average temp for the same billing cycle last year so it should be pretty comparable to the old A/C unit.
It appears we used 36.7% less electricity this year vs. last year!
Presumably this is all because of the improved efficiency of the new heat pump. Very nice.

Everyone in my family except me is super into D&D. The kids spend hours talking about D&D things, designing characters, etc. They live for the campaign - which only happens for a few hours maybe once a week.
Sometimes I come up with a rough idea/outline for a campaign and my wife DMs it, so I'm not totally disengaged from it, but for whatever reason I just don't have the patience to actually participate.
While they played last weekend, I played Legend of Zelda on NES instead. 😛

We call this fella Doofus. Three years ago a young hawk was born in one of our trees and spent awhile learning to fly around our yard. He'd crash land right in front of us and just... stand there awhile and look around. He let us get pretty close to him, too. He's been hanging out here in the summers ever since then. Sometimes he flies down and looks in the window.

The solar company is coming today to do their full site survey (as opposed to the salesman's rough estimates of the size/cost/etc). Once that's done they can write up the actual contract with the final cost and timeline and such.
The bank switched our refinance status to "preparing for closing" which appears to just involve waiting for a lawyer to sign off that our title is clear and then the next step is, I think, signing a bunch of things and waiting for the money to show up.

Ok, so... A Minecraft Movie was actually totally awesome. I don't know why it has such low scores - it was freakin' hilarious. I think the thing is, the movie doesn't really explain anything about Minecraft or give much of a reason for anything nor does it even bother trying to target people unfamiliar with the game - but if you're watching it with a bunch of kids who literally live and breathe Minecraft, grew up with it, know the game and its lore inside and out, well, then it's a total riot.

Ocean's Eight was super fun. One kid declared it just as good as the original (he means Ocean's Eleven from 2001). I don't think it rose to those lofty heights, but I do love a clever heist movie and this one didn't disappoint. I didn't see the reveal near the end coming, either, so that was a nice surprise.

Youngest kid refunds *so* many games on Steam - sometimes after mere minutes. Today he played a game for 6 whole minutes before he pulled the trigger on a refund request.
Except.. today, Steam is not happy with him.
He finally got an official warning to stop doing that or else they'll revoke his ability to refund games.
On the one hand, I totally get it and warned him this could happen.
On the other hand, he doesn't quite "get it" and thinks Steam is being unfair.
Such is life, I suppose.

Trying to watch AppleTV’s Invasion but wow this is the slowest and most plodding show I’ve ever seen. It’s like there’s a good idea or two in here, but they didn’t know to execute it. Trying to make the characters seem deep and complex with long pointless backstory and conflict while ignoring the far more potentially interesting aliens the show was supposed to be about. It’s not very good, tbh. Except now we have the sunk cost thing going on… maybe season 2 is better? How did it get a season 2?

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was chaotic fun. Jim Carrey easily stole the show - I swear he was born to play Doctor Robotnik. I'm pretty sure there were a lot of references or callbacks to the previous two movies and/or Sonic lore from cartoons and whatnot but since we can't remember the other movies and know basically zero lore, they all went totally over our heads. I definitely enjoyed the gag about blowing on the USB stick the same way we used to blow on video game cartridges back in the day. lol

Take SwiftUI, for example. It's built entirely on "advanced" Swift features like result builders and property wrappers. It straight up abuses Swift all over the place. New devs are thrown right into the deep end *immediately*.
Almost no one is starting from `print("hello, world")` anymore.

For example, there's the idea that programmers should start single threaded and slowly move to concurrency - but you can't actually do that in real life, IMO. Libraries/frameworks constantly impose concurrency on you - either they have async functions or they're using callbacks where stuff happens "later" and often on a different thread/actor or the function is marked nonisolated (for good reason), etc.
You can't ease into it.

I appreciate that the Swift folks are thinking about how difficult and confusing the concurrency story has become (https://forums.swift.org/t/prospective-vision-improving-the-approachability-of-data-race-safety/76183) but I feel like even with all of this, some of the most painful points are being missed.

Extremely in the coding weeds and not happy about it at all.
Glad that this is a short week due to the holiday since I'm tired, but I'm not feeling confident I will get out of these weeds by Thursday which means they might be hanging over my head the whole time.

Every time there's a popular new social network, advocates will say things like, "it's so fun over there!" or, "the vibes are so good!"
Unfortunately the advocates rarely acknowledge that it's fun and the vibes are good because practically everyone on the new network are only posting about how it's fun and that the vibes are good.
Enjoy the feeling while it lasts! I wish it didn't have to fade, but the novelty always seems to wear off eventually.

We finished Slow Horses. Now we have to wait almost a year for the next season.?! That’s a crime. It’s criminal. There should be a continuous stream of nothing but new Slow Horses episodes from now until the end of time. I want a live stream of Slow Horses. Come on Apple! Get on it! Make it happen!

Clicking external web links in Slack is now opening Safari *behind* the Slack window on my mac. This is absolutely not what I want. Restarting Slack didn't fix it. Is there some new setting for this? I noticed this a week or so ago and then I think it fixed itself.. and now it's doing it again.
Maybe I need to reboot? (sigh...)

thing that really bugs me is that macOS seems to be trending in a similar direction where digging beyond the surface reveals a ton of old cruft, outdated UIs, broken stuff, etc.

we have one Windows 10 machine and I get so confused whenever I try to do anything on it. It's weird how both similar and utterly alien it is relative to something like Windows XP which was probably the last version of Windows I used for anything real.
