Nolan has absolutely no interest in the culture this story is rooted in. He cannot be bothered to even *try* to bring that wild, messy, violent world to life.

I don't know what culture it is that his characters are supposed to be living in because none of it is explained nor is it shown. They talk about "civilization" several times, but...what civilization? What do we know about how the people in this movie's world live & think? Fuck all.
