just to wade into the conversation a bit with a practical testimonial: I was traveling in Scotland recently and successfully used a pair of Meshtastic nodes to stay in contact within a group, sometimes relying on the local mesh to relay. It stretches across the main populated belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh. They’ve done a lot of work to connect and can fairly reliably converse across it. Very impressive. (Tbf a very favorable topography for it, and urban issues still.)
