we have a great mesh going in the NYC area, reaching coherent conversations of 1000 messages per day sometimes, spanning a major portion of the metro. It took a fair bit of work, lucky access, and ongoing management to get it here. https://coverage.nyme.sh
I use it in backcountry conditions with great success but very different usecase.

two of the MeshCore devs make their own proprietary software (Mesh OS, Ripple) on top of MeshCore’s open source firmware. MeshCore.co.uk is controlled by one dev (who makes Mesh OS), MeshCore.io is controlled by another (who makes Ripple), and the split _just happened_ so dunno how it’s going to shake out exactly. There are two Discords even.
Meshtastic is a similar, older, and entirely separate project with a GPL base.

IIRC MeshCore exists at all because Meshtastic’s GPL made it incompatible with Ripple’s closed-source model.

a prevailing theory is it was leaked by them to make Good look guilty of being a visibly queer woman. That was her offense more than any action. And he was using his phone because the whole project is content displaying domination. No different than Noem posing in front of the cages at CECOT. They are making the content they wish they had seen instead during 2020.

alas there is basically zero MC mesh here. The few repeaters around haven’t connected yet on narrow settings. We had a little success with LongFast-equivalent configs but no stable links yet. @npub1c60…3dm4

his ability to organize and attract talent is very reminiscent of Obama’s community organizer roots. The well-crafted transition site is encouraging and suggests he can keep the momentum going.

Interesting reading on lessons learned from amateur radio and mesh networking, how the Meshtastic community is relearning them, and some new technologies that might provide a more reliable approach. https://www.zeroretries.org/i/170507037/hard-lessons-learned-what-not-to-do #Meshtastic #AREDN

exactly, all the fancy tech aspects don’t matter if a community doesn’t form around it. I’m also intrigued by Meshcore, but it’s radio silent in these parts. Meanwhile, local Meshtastic is coming alive. More importantly, the community is organizing, and can coordinate adoption or migration as needs change.

just to wade into the conversation a bit with a practical testimonial: I was traveling in Scotland recently and successfully used a pair of Meshtastic nodes to stay in contact within a group, sometimes relying on the local mesh to relay. It stretches across the main populated belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh. They’ve done a lot of work to connect and can fairly reliably converse across it. Very impressive. (Tbf a very favorable topography for it, and urban issues still.)

sheesh, it doesn’t even make sense to block it if it really were going away since how could someone notify people of alternate addresses to use! Irresponsible.

possible it’s being blocked due to association of .io with crypto scams or other spam? I had a similar issue with an .xyz domain and eventually learned grifters are fond of it. And my .me occasionally gets delivery failures.

I often do have to correct people, typically they hear “Alan” or “Alex” first. But my male self has never been told it’s a beautiful name. I wonder why. (I actually do sometimes go with Alex to make it easier.)

IIRC the category differences are mostly about twist and shielding, focused on communication performance. Whereas the gauge matters for amperage, I don’t think the category makes a difference. An ultra thin Cat6A will be able to power less than a building-grade 5e. Cat6A makes sense for future proof but make sure it’s 23 AWG (most riser- or plenum-rated cables should be) and solid copper. I’ve got Cat6 all over handling 10-15W POE no problem.

I am forever grateful to a previous manager for the lesson of always making a point to learn people’s names, especially folks in service or reception roles that you see every day. Most importantly because it’s the decent thing to do, but it has the benefit that as soon as you need help they will, often eagerly.
