The RSDLP was an organization with many factions, and so many people fail to realize that the socialist movement in Russia was democratic until Lenin, and later Stalin, consolidated power by banning factions, forcing opposition parties into exile, and attacking political dissidents.

There were the Socialist Revolutionaries, the Mensheviks, the Bundists, and even sub-factions within the Bolsheviks. They were all crushed. The Jewish Labor Bund was absorbed into the Bolsheviks, the Mensheviks had to hide out in Georgia, the Socialist Revolutionaires were either purged or absorbed, and the Left Opposition of the Bolsheviks were also eliminated.
