The Soviets did some things right, and a lot of things wrong.
When it comes to economy, they are a valuable starting point for identifying the flaws of central planning, and themselves created some economic and mathematical theories and techniques that are vital for any modern socialist to understand (linear programming comes to mind).
The macroeconomic stability of the USSR and the high level of employment are things I believe a democratic socialist system should emulate.
Their political system is proof of the superiority of a multi party system over a single party system, and the dangers of ideological rigidity. In addition, the USSR was a violent police state, and this is something that should be addressed. I personally propose police abolition as an answer to this problem.

the idea is that if an enterprise often lies and makes it harder for other enterprises to do their job, there could be a community measure to get it closed down or implement disciplinary measures.
It would also fix the problem of limited information, as there would be a worker in every enterprise who runs the computer system and calculates the specific targets needed to do a given task with the aid of the other workers. Workers would also be given the autonomy to manage themselves, just as long as there are no shortages detected and they are meeting the standards voted on by the community.

One of the biggest problems with the Soviet system (other than their profound lack of democratic input in the allocation process) was the fact that they simply couldn't keep up. The planners in Gosplan balanced inputs and outputs like it was a chemical equation, and did so in a highly aggregated manner that left out important details. In addition, they often only did this process for the first thousand products or so because it was just too much for people to do by hand.

People often look at the USSR in a vacuum. They see the horrible horrible things that the Bolshevik government did, and criticize them (as they should!), but they don't compare them to the actions of other states.
They believe that because America has a market instead of an administrative-command economy, and 2 political parties instead of one, that it is unambiguously better in every way.
This is woefully mistaken. The American economy is controlled almost entirely by a couple dozen firms that are all owned by a tiny amount of holding companies and hedge funds. We, in a sense, have a highly centralized economy. In addition, these firms are highly influential in both political parties, and have a significant role in guiding their policy through lobbyists and dark money. It's kind of bizarre.

Meanwhile, in America, there are elections. There is a Congress. You have the right to free speech in the constitution.
But in reality, large amounts of people can't vote, particularly the disabled, the elderly, and ethnic minorities. The Congress is filled with people who have ties to business oligarchs, and so the desires of ordinary people often go unheard. The election system makes it virtually impossible for anyone other than a Democrat or a Republican to win, granting them a virtual political monopoly. It is prohibitively expensive for ordinary people to run for office. There were multiple McCarthyist purges throughout US history, and state violence against Black Americans is widespread. We incarcerate large numbers of people, a disproportionate amount of them being lower income or Black.

The RSDLP was an organization with many factions, and so many people fail to realize that the socialist movement in Russia was democratic until Lenin, and later Stalin, consolidated power by banning factions, forcing opposition parties into exile, and attacking political dissidents.

The concept of "Holocaust Inversion" makes the assumption that what the Nazis did was in any way singular in its evil, and that similar ideologies are incapable of happening again, something which I believe is fundamentally inaccurate.
I also dislike it because it says that if you compare Smotrich or Ben Gvir's ideology to Nazism, it means you are antisemitic, something I believe unfairly exempts the Israeli far right from the same scrutiny as the European far right, which I believe ideologically similar to both the Israeli far right and the original European fascists. In addition, this would mean that many Israeli protesters against the Judicial Coup would be considered antisemitic, something which on the face of it is patently absurd.
