I think you could actually build it on bluetooth. Those things are like $30 or something and then like the article says, old vapes.
They are actually just radios so you can send any sort of signal, but they are built for bluetooth so that's sort of their "native". Some also do regular wifi and then you just have to know like the id or something.
I'd go with NEAR signal devices actually, maybe. Handshakes. "Dude, your phone working?" hold out, shake
