This experimental piece ended up being a very special piece of artwork to me that I did in 2020. Part of my first ever commissioned artwork, so I was slightly sad to part with it but delighted it was received well.

I’ve done lots of detailed artwork in the past but never like this. It was my first time creating a miniature. It’s a partial copy of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai (1831).

I used a slice of oak branch that I sourced myself from a small dead branch off a local tree. Note the star in the centre of the wood and the natural ray-like lines in the wood around it. I didn’t want to hide these details so did not paint the sky, but instead left the wood behind visible.
