What happened before that? An oral tradition of poetry. Which, of course, anyone can access in one form or another. It promoted gathering, listening, and communal catharsis. It promoted skills in memorization and public performance.

By the time the printing press made reading and printing accessible to everyone, those skills had died out, and new technology was on its way to supplant the good the printing press brought the masses.
