I've read, but can't verify, that the Great Plastification started with Coca Cola. They realised that cheap disposable (as they were thought of then) meant that they could shut their cleaning and recirculation plants, as well as lay off some of their fleets of collection trucks and drivers. So they could make more profit.
Now, I doubt if they're the only offender, but the appeal of shutting cleaning plants and laying off a workforce in the interests of more profit is irresistible to the capitalist mentality.
