Can't mention air pollution. Can't mention conservation of native species. Can't mention the effects of invasive species.

If you're interested in hanging out with other people online watching something, Metafilter does an annual holiday marathon watch that always includes a really random assortment of stuff.

I was the 399th person to vote at our unincorporated DeKalb precinct where the only thing on the ballot was the 2 Public Service Commissioners. I think tonight is gonna be a good night for ordinary Georgians who care about responsible electric utilities.

I did link to the article. You are welcome to read it. Or just not read my post. Your choice.

This is just so appalling. This sort of compliance in advance by National Geographic is what is doing us all in. A corporation that big should have the courage of its massive wealth to support it releasing the very best art it can, regardless of what MAGAheads think.

Mine is a closed barrel that has a pipe connecting it to the (still intact) gutter. Highly recommended in mosquito prone places.

Yeah, that sounds right. The beavers always win. Even ending up with a beaver in your freezer is only winning the battle. People will always lose the war, because beaver are very productive and industrious.
Where in middle GA are you from? My mom grew up in Monticello.

I'm speaking about Atlanta #beavers at the International Urban Wildlife Conference #IUWC2025 next week in the special all day Peach State Urban Wildlife session. As a stream ecologist who mostly studies ecosystems and bugs, this is pretty different for me, but I figure it will be really cool to learn from experts in tangential fields and assumed there would be beaver talks from other cities.
Friends, I am the only person talking about beavers at the entire 4 day urban wildlife conference.

They made Jimmy Carter sell his peanut farm, but JD Vance gets to get rich by selling American farmland to foreign investors.

This is the week in BIOL 1108K where we go outside and look at plant diversity: a moss, fern, conifer, monocot, herbaceous eudicit, and woody eudicot. Yes, I literally make them touch grass

Advice for those applying for faculty positions focused on teaching:
For those not from the US, in the US we have many faculty jobs that are primarily teaching, not research positions.
When applying for those jobs, first and foremost, in your materials, focus on teaching, not research.
We want to see evidence of your teaching experience AND the thought you put into your teaching. Put a lot of work into your teaching philosophy. Give specific examples!

All kinds of cool animals overwinter in the leaves. If you shred them, you're shredding things like stick bugs and sphinx moth pupae.

And yes, that's exactly why scientists at the EPA, not Supreme Court justices, should be determining policy. Because this stuff is so confusing that even hardworking science journalists and their editors and fact checkers can get it wrong.

Unfortunately, the Sci Am article didn't explain it correctly either. The Ohio Clean Air Act suit was about all nitrogen oxides, which includes nitrogen oxide and nitrous oxide as well as other compounds made of nitrogen and oxygen.
Nitrous oxide is laughing gas, but it is also a commonly produced byproduct of industrial and natural microbial processes that is a potent greenhouse gas and was also part of the regulations.

To me as a biologist, our answer is Darwin's On the Origin of Species and Gregor Mendel's Experiments in Plant Hybridization. Everything else flows from those two.

But I am a safe person for them to come to regardless of the race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or who they voted for yesterday, if they or someone they love is in trouble, needs help, I will do everything I can to help them. And I didn't cry, because they need me not to cry, but I am so damn scared for them.

I told my students, my Black and brown students, my Temporary Protected Status, DACA, and refugee students, my trans and non-binary students, my disabled students, my students exploring their sexuality and gender for the first time, my veteran students, my students who are parents, my beloved students, I told them I know many of them are too young to really remember what happened 8 years ago.

We had a no backpacks rule in junior high. It was either carry products in a pocket/small purse or run to your locker in between classes.
