Those communities were likely much smaller too so it was easier to form bonds with people. On social media you’re looking at 100-200+ different conversations easily each day. It’s impossible to get to know people well just skimming through.

social media is pretty crappy because it generally kills meaningful discussions, online communities have existed since the dawn of internet and they used to produce much tighter relationships (i'm still friends with people who i've met over 20y ago on irc and forums)
