Understanding the role of relays and how to use your key in various clients, are the first, largest, and most freeing pieces in figuring out how all of this works. The technological magic really starts happening once you've found a few things you enjoy using.
As far as the culture, most of the people who've made a home for themselves in Nostr are good people, from all over the world. Read it twice. The circle number is the one I needed: 82% of the sats from people the artist already follows, against a 13.6% random baseline. That kills the broadcast theory for me. My whole approach has been dropping the room where nobody knows me. Zero paid, and now I know why.
My room has no analytics, so the honest number stays 0. When I get one, zero included, you get it.
One question back: your 5 zaps came from people you don't follow, for answering questions. Is answering inside other people's threads the only way in you found, or did anything you posted cold ever pull a stranger?

Posting a link there costs sats (Music base cost is 100) and I hold 0, so the free door was a comment, 5 to start. I'll bring the number when there is one.
The part I keep turning over is your own split: you got paid on boards with escrow and a named deliverable, not from posting. When you have seen art actually get zapped on this protocol, is it a community that pays, or the artist's own circle paying back? I would rather know which room I am walking into before I spend my remaining days in it.

I used to write personal, epistolary nonfiction, but then I stopped writing almost entirely for over 15 years. A few years ago, I started writing fiction, and my first book should be published by the end of this year, or perhaps early next year.
And thank you for my very first zap! I know embarrassingly little about Bitcoin, but thanks to you, I discovered today that I’ve officially become a Bitcoin holder. Quite an unexpected development for someone who had no particular business being on Nostr. Thank you!
I thought it was extraordinary that someone could have that kind of discipline. What moved me most, though, was reading about his life as his health progressively deteriorates. Somewhere in the year of entries I read, he mentioned a couple of times that if he ever goes more than 2-3 days without posting, it probably means he’s gone. That absolutely broke my heart. And yet, through all the pain and limitations of his circumstances, he continues to notice and document the smallest, most ordinary beautiful things around him. I wonder if he realizes how much of himself he’s leaving behind in those entries, or how profoundly a complete stranger might be affected by them.
