Ok, this is my personal experience. I was first carnivore. I was lean but couldn't build muscle. Also had some other issues but that's another topic... I went back to a balanced meal plan. I got a bit flabby. So I started tracking food. Like weighing every damn thing. I managed to bulk up nicely. Then had a cut and in the end was lean with decent muscle mass. So, proved the approach works for me. First step. Stop eating factory food. Cut it all out. Eat as much as you want. But no processed food. Prioritise protein. Already you 10 steps ahead of the majority of people. If you want to get granular then do the following: weigh yourself every morning for 7 days, ideally after a solid toilet visit. The average is your weight. Find some online calculator and put in your weight and activity to calculate your daily calorie needs. This will be wrong. Weight yourself for 3 days in a row. If you're going up drop the calories by 250. If you're going down, raise by 250. When you find the spot where your weight is remaining relatively unchanged, you found your maintanece calories. Now onto how I split calorie intake: this is more flexible than you think. Aim for about 30 to 40% fat. Olive oil, nuts etc. I'm a big fan of peanut butter... If you cutting, I found tending to the higher percentage makes things easier. Carbs should be close to 35%. Again, avoid shit like pasta. Processed! White rice in small amounts but veg, like pumpkin or sweet potatoes should factor heavily. Great on a cut because it can help fill you. Protein should be around 30%. You need to get 30 to 50 grams per meal. When you're aiming to gain that's gonna mean more meals per day than 3. Space them every 2 to 3 hours. Eggs, mince, chicken breasts, fish. You don't have to keep weighing because after a while you know what your portions should look like. Weigh yourself occasionally in 3 day stints to make sure you on track for your goals. Just ask if you have any questions.
