We have experienced some slowness on our instance today, mainly due to mild DDoS attacks from bot armies, AI, and scrapers. I'm thinking of adding Cloudflare protections and anti-bot mechanisms, as blocking bots at the web server level is like a game of whack-a-mole. However, this needs careful planning, as we don't want legitimate users to get blocked by accident.
We also do not intend to block all automation, since I use some myself and we want our API to stay reliable. Additionally, when content is shared on other social media or messaging platforms, we still want previews to generate properly.
I'll share an update on our progress later.

I often have this feeling that good things won't last and that someone will soon do or say something terrible to me... Or take it all away from me. Or blame me for even trying. Or give me shit about the choices I've made.
I still often feel that I don't deserve happiness or anything good in this world. It might be due to trauma, anxiety, or past depression (I believe nobody ever truly heals those wounds, but instead learns to live with them in "remission").
I hope things last this time. I know these are just late-night thoughts in a heightened emotional state and not necessarily true.
PS. Postdrome is the worst.

🐦‍⬛ Mastodon Bird UI (nightly)
Still on unreleased nighly branch, with a batch of navigation fixes vendored in this round:
- The left navigation scrolls properly at extreme browser zoom on low resolution screens, and only on desktop, so the mobile drawer is left alone.
- The mobile navigation bar sits above the slideout pane again, so it no longer covers the hamburger menu, and the mobile navigation links got proper padding.
- Fixed the compact navigation font size on screens below 1080px height, which was being overridden by the desktop rule.
- Navigation hover highlights are no longer clipped on their left edge on larger screens.

I haven't been posting here much about my runs. I need to figure out an easier way to share runs between platforms - perhaps another side project is coming out of this...

We were accidentally running the old monolithic Sidekiq service alongside the optimized and split ones, which means we were using double the RAM. This might have caused some 504 errors and slowdowns for users, and I apologize for that.
What I've learned today: It's best to clean up after yourself when making changes. Everything should be blazing fast again. The slowness was occasional, didn't affect all users, and lasted about a day.

Got a RAM update. It cost 300 euros. The next tier would have been 980 euros, so I got it pretty cheap. I now have 48 GB. It is expected that RAM prices will triple by 2030 thanks to AI. I should have bought my 64 GB years ago, it would have cost me the same as my 32 GB upgrade today.

Uutinen: Hallitus ei tue enää Garden Helsingin valtiontuen etenemistä, kertoo pääministeri Petteri Orpo. Se tarkoittaa käytännössä sitä, ettei areenahanke tule saamaan hallituksen kehysriihessä 2025 luvattua 35 miljoonan euron ehdollista valtiontukea.
Oikea päätös tottakai, mutta tämä indikoi selvästi, että ei mennyt ihan putkeen. Olisiko alustavaa hanketta vedetty pois, ellei olisi muodostunut skandaaliksi ja tieto olisi levinnyt laajemmin mediaan? Ja edelleen, mitkä ne "ehdot" tähän edes olivat? Miksi Orpo kovasti puolusteli hanketta jopa telkkarissa, jos kerran vedetään pois? Tämä aiheuttaa vain enemmän kysymyksiä.

Selvittelin hieman lisää yhdistysasioita. Ulkopuolisia ei-jäsenten rahalahjoituksia ei voida kerätä jatkossakaan. Eli kaikki mementomori.socialin palvelinkulut pyritään tulevaisuudessa kattamaan jäsenmaksuilla/jäsenyyksillä. Syitä tähän on muutama:
1. "Vuonna 2026 uuden rahankeräyslupahakemusten käsittelystä Poliisihallituksessa peritään 530 euron suuruinen maksu ja muutoslupahakemuksen käsittelystä 173 euron maksu. Vuosi-ilmoituksen käsittelystä peritään 205 euron maksu."

Interestingly, Meta has been implementing a "tune your algorithm" type of feature, which is surprisingly user-focused. You can select the topics you want to see more of and what you want to see less of, mute words, add your preferences... of course, Meta has their own agenda and wants you to get as hooked as possible so they can make money off you as a product, but I like the idea that it is not completely opaque.
I am building something similar in my Mastodon instance but truly without any monetary goal.
For algorithm haters out there, remember that reverse chronological order is an algorithm too. If you like getting video recommendations on YouTube, PeerTube, or music recommendations in a playlist, that is an algorithm too. I honestly do not understand all the algorithm hate when it is focused on the tech itself rather than commercialism.
The capitalist nature of algorithms is, of course, something to stand against, since it works by exploiting users. But if it is for user benefit without any rotten backstory, algorithms in my world are great.

I moved my Bluesky account to Eurosky. It was the most technical thing I have done since updating DNS records, honestly 😅 I had to deal with migrator tools, DIDs, rotation keys, recovery keys, Migration Tokens, typing in my old password, new password, old handle, new handle, "PDS Mover - Missing Blobs Importer"...
There are explanations like "do not close this page!" and "monitor your email!" and "If you're wondering what 'blobs' are, that is simply what media files are called on the AT Protocol, the network that includes Bluesky, Eurosky and others."
For me as a nerd, things like these are naturally part of everyday life, just like setting up DNS records or configuring services, installing servers and infrastructures, programming and so on. But they said mAsToD0n iS diFfIcUlt wHaT is A sErVeR sO cOmPLIcaTed?!! Moving a Mastodon account from one instance to another seems like a walk in the park in comparison. My mom would not know how to migrate a Bluesky account to Europe.

- Ei-alkuperäisellä laadulla otettuja (joskus oli valinta, että älä tallenna alkuperäisiä), eli keskilaatuiset kuvat menevät "ilmatteeksi"
- Roskakorissa olevat kuvat
- Kuvat ennen 2021, ennen Google Onen ja maksullisen tilan lanseerausta tallennetut kuvat
- Ei-tuetut tiedostot ja Pixelillä otetut kuvat
Ehkä jotain muitakin poikkeuksia on. Sinänsä melko harhaanjohtavaa Googlelta, että tällaista vaihtelua ilmenee.

@nprofile…tzwt Hyvää pohdintaa. Itse pidän itseäni teknologiamyönteisenä, eli voisi myös sanoa tekoälymyönteisenä nykyään. Harmillisen usein generatiivisesta tekoälystä puhuttaessa puhutaan pelkästään kaupallisten yritysten (OpenAI, Anthropic) tuotteista ja unohdetaan avoin lähdekoodi. Toki itsekin olen esimerkiksi Anthropicin vannoutunut asiakas.
Linus Torvalds vertasi LLM:iä compilereihin, mielestäni yllättävää, että hänkin on ollut asiasta suhteellisen neutraali. Itseäni lähinnä nyppii kun pää on koko ajan pölkyllä aina kun tykkään jostain tuotteesta tai ohjelmoin itse, ja näkyy avoimesti että AI ollut mukana. Koen kuitenkin, että AI on kuten sähkö tai Internet, se on niin valtava kattotermi, että ei voi sanoa sen olevan puhtaasti pahaa ja vastustettavaa tai hyvä ja puolustettava asia. Se on molempia yhtä aikaa ja se tekee tilanteesta haastavan. Itselleni AI on äärimmäisen tehokas työkalu, jota käytän päivittäin. Kuviin ja musiikkiin kieltäydyn käyttämästä.

@nprofile…v89y I used to think I was a workspace person, but I'm not. It's hard for me to separate things into different containers. If I don't have an infinite canvas like this, I just stack windows endlessly on top of each other. On my Mac, it helps to have Launchpad/Exposé available. But this feels like having all windows constantly accessible - just zoom out. Still, it feels weird now to use a "regular desktop" 😄 like being locked in.

Mutta Arch asentuu ilman visuaalista työpöytäympäristöä, kuten debian tai gentoo. Sen hienous on siinä, että käytössä on minimaalinen setuppi eikä mitään turhaa, toisin kuin monet Linuxit asentavat valmiiksi kaikenlaista mitä ei sitten tarvitsekaan. Työpöytäympäristön voi asentaa ihan itse sitten Linuxin asentamisen jälkeen, ja näihinkin on hemmetin tarkat ohjeet ARchin wikissä. Itselläni käytössä hyprland + DankMaterialShell, mutta voi laittaa vaikka Gnomen tai KDE:n jos haluaa (olen käyttänyt kumpaakin vuosikymmenten saatossa).

It took me about 2 days to transfer over 250 GB of photos from Google Photos to @nprofile…mr4w. Now my photos are safe and sound in Europe.
The face recognition works even better than Google's, and Immich is an awesome piece of software. I would have hosted this entirely on my own like my Nextcloud, but paying a couple of bucks for 450 GB of storage and a fast server is a real bargain and saves me the hassle. Well done, PixelUnion!

What many people misunderstand about hosting your own content (like this social media instance) is thinking we somehow NEED a big audience or Big Tech involvement.
I'm perfectly fine if the world faded away and it was just the thousand of us here. It's like the early days of the web when we had small forums, nobody missed Reddit back then. Federation is a big plus, not a requirement.
It's the same with websites or IRC for me. I know people use Discord, but I still stick to IRC even if there are only about a hundred of us left. I know people use AI now and website visitors are dropping, but who cares? I still keep doing it for those who like to read.
I don't need the whole world involved for this to feel worthwhile. It's mine, I own it, and I host it for as long as I breathe. After that, it won't matter to me anymore, but I hope other admins keep things running the way I did.

I'm happy to adjust it to match your stylelint setup, and I can test it against main. What I'm not interested in right now is maintaining another npm package, I already have too many. I agree, there aren't many SCSS stylelint plugins out there, I'm already maintaining a few older ones.

I create a lot, every single day. Lately, I've noticed it's sometimes hard for me to release things as open source. Almost everything I do is meant for the common good, but every now and then I get hit with a wave of anxiety. It goes back to at least three times in the past when I shared something with good intentions and ended up facing a public hate campaign for it. When you've been burned a few times, it's only natural to hesitate before putting your hand back in the fire.
I start to question things - is privacy handled properly, is my vision right, what if people reject it, what will they think about AI being involved... The more doubts I have, the less I feel like publishing my private repo. It's ironic because I've even given lectures on open source, yet I completely understand why some people fear it. It's not always fun. In fact, it can feel like putting yourself on display for judgment.
I'm learning to take it easier, reminding myself that I don't have to release everything. I don't need to explain myself all the time. I'm allowed to keep a few gems just for myself.

Experimenting with new native SVGs to bring into Mastodon core. Instead of the CSS hacks we use in the Mastodon Bird UI, these SVGs provide a more natural solution.
The CSS sprite-based ones are fine and serve their purpose as a theme layered over Mastodon, but I miss a more native approach for the large numbers we have in the posts in our Mastodon fork. The Mastodon team can later decide whether to use these animations, as they will be built against the main branch.
What can I say, I like appealing micro-integrations.

:skull360: We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.6.0-rc.1+mementomods-2026-06-13, along with Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-beta.1.rc nightly updates.
Mastodon hit Release Candidate this round. The 4.6 release is right around the corner.
This update includes today's latest daily build with 85 new commits from upstream since our last build mementomods-2026-06-07.
What's new in Mastodon core, these are the changes Mastodon Team have introduced us in the latest nightly version we are running:
- Import Custom Filters, the import side of last release's export, so you can move your filter rules between accounts and instances
- Bot notifications can be filtered with a new dedicated policy, separate from regular filtered-notifications handling
- Newsletters can now be viewed individually in the admin UI
- Polls and media attachments can be combined in the same post (the old restriction is lifted)
- Media attachment descriptions raised to a 10000 character limit
- Media attachments now carry duration in their ActivityPub representation, so audio and video duration travels with the post over federation
- Collections continue to polish
- Several internal refactors (typing-statuses representation, sundry test coverage on background workers) that should make future patches smoother

- Trends section top margin removed for a tighter side panel
- Trends drop to 2 items on screen heights below 830px (4 items fit above that)
- Dropdown menus are capped to the viewport height and become scrollable on short or zoomed screens
- Avatar follow badge sits above the display name (z-index) so the first row of the status stays clickable (only for forks that have experimental For you enabled)

I've received some questions about my algorithm experiments. First off, I'm building this mainly for myself, since I often don't have time to scroll through posts chronologically and just want the best and most important bits from my social media. It's opt-in and currently only an experiment in my fork.
How the "For you" ranked feed on mementomori.social actually works:
First, the ground rules. Again, "For you" is opt-in on our instance. If you never touch the toggle, your home feed stays exactly as it is: chronological, complete, and untouched. Nothing below applies to you. We never turn it on without your consent, and every setting is stored and controlled by you.
Where the posts come from. The feed ranks the newest ~800 posts and boosts from people you follow. If you also enable "Include posts from people you don't follow," trending posts on the instance get mixed in, roughly one in every four slots, and your scrolling can continue through the trending pool once your own feed runs out.
How a post is scored. Every post receives one score made of four parts multiplied together:
1. Engagement: boosts count 3x, replies 2x, favourites 1x.
For posts from other instances, we use counts from their home instance so federation doesn't undercount them.
2. Your affinity to the author: how often you've favourited, boosted, or replied to that person in the last 30 days.
It's logarithmic, the 5th interaction matters much more than the 50th, so no one can dominate your feed just because you liked them a lot once.
3. Time decay: a post loses half its score every 6 hours. Old posts fade no matter how popular they are.
4. A touch of randomness (±10%) so the order isn't fixed.
Freshness. Every post shown to you goes to the back of the line for 2 days. That's why refreshing gives you new posts instead of showing the same viral hit again and again, and why "Load more" always digs deeper instead of repeating.
Housekeeping rules: boosts show the original post. Your own posts and boosts never appear. Private mentions never appear. Brand-new posts wait 15 minutes before entering so they have a bit of time to gather reactions first.
What it does NOT do: There's no tracking beyond one thing: a list of post IDs already shown to you, which auto-deletes after 2 days. No reading your posts, no content analysis, no machine learning, and no profile built about you.
The weights above are the entire model, and your instance admin can adjust every number. Hopefully, if this project matures, you'll be able to adjust every weight yourself.

- "For you" feed (experimental). Open your home column settings and switch on "Ranked order" to try an algorithmic feed: posts ranked by engagement and by who you interact with, fresh content on every refresh, and you'll rarely see the same post twice. Flip on "Include posts from people you don't follow" to discover new accounts beyond your follows. See someone interesting there? Tap the + on their avatar to follow them.
- PageUp and PageDown scroll the page normally again (thanks @nprofile…wx78 for the feedback on this one!)
- The navigation is a bit tidier: Collections and Followed hashtags now live under "More".
The For you feed is fully opt-in. Your home feed stays exactly as it was unless you turn it on. Feedback very welcome!

Eli aika varmuudella voin sanoa, että on Mastodon coren tietoinen päätös ja heidän muutos ja todennäköisesti liittyy saavutettavuuteen tai sitten se on bugi. Yleensä tab ja shift+tab on tuohon käyttöön. Voin itse tietysti tarkistaa/muuttaa tämän meille. Space on yleensä se näppäin jolla näkövammaiset siirtyvät pidempiä matkoja alemmas ja olikohan shift+space toiseen suuntaan.

Mementomori.social experienced 57 minutes of downtime earlier today. Here's what happened and what we've done about it.
What happened: A large volume of connections from external crawler/bot IP ranges accumulated in a stuck state (CLOSE_WAIT) inside our web server (nginx). These zombie connections exhausted nginx's connection pool and connections per worker, which caused it to stop accepting new connections entirely resulting in ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED for everyone trying to reach the site.
Why it took 57 minutes: The sole admin available (me) was in a meeting when the issue began, and other admins were unavailable. There was no automated recovery in place to detect and resolve this type of failure.
How it was resolved: Nginx was restarted, which cleared all stale connections and immediately restored service.
What we've done to prevent this:
- Installed and configured Monit, a process monitoring tool that automatically checks all critical services (web, background workers, streaming, database, cache, and nginx) every 2 minutes and restarts them if they become unresponsive
- This means similar outages should now self-heal within minutes, even when no admin is available
I'm really sorry for the disruption. We take the reliability of this instance seriously, and this change should make a real difference moving forward. I'm also planning to apply other mitigations, as some parts of our instance may have been underconfigured.

Listening to "Character Limit" by Kate Conger and Ryan Mac on a run. It's a solid account of how Twitter fell apart.
The book sharpens something I keep coming back to about Dorsey and Graber's idea of "decentralized" social media. Graber says she spent years studying existing protocols and decided none were good enough for users, so Bluesky built ATProto from scratch. I still don't buy that none of the existing solutions were worth improving.
There are two kinds of nerds: the Silicon Valley startup kind, and the open standards kind - Torvalds, Berners-Lee, people who build a commons and don't try to own it. Bluesky comes from the first camp. The framing is still commercial: a company, VC money, a product that happens to have an open layer. That's the part that doesn't sit right with me.
Decentralization as something you can market isn't the same as decentralization as something no one controls and any living room nerd could host and tweak on their own.

@nprofile…5a58 I'm a happy customer of Cloudflare. It is true that Turnstile reads client signals and hardened browsers can hit false positives. However, it is not as simple as "CF blocks schools"... AFAIK what breaks on filtered school networks is the filter's own TLS inspection rewriting the connection, so the challenge can't validate. That sits with the school's IT, not Cloudflare.
On privacy, the alternative most sites reach for is reCAPTCHA, which feeds Google, or hCaptcha that is actually built to core and equally calls home to hcaptcha.com.
Turnstile keeps signals at CF with no cross-site profile. "Most educational filters can't pass" is also a big claim that I find hard to believe.
We don't have completely open sign-ups anyway, for good reason. If any legitimate user runs into this roadblock, I'd much rather send them an invite link than argue about extreme privacy stances or let the constant registration spam continue.

I get asked this every now and then, so here's a quick explanation for anyone on a smaller Mastodon server (like mementomori.social):
If you open someone's profile and it looks empty or only shows a few old posts, it's not broken. It's just how Mastodon works.
A server only receives posts that have been sent to it. Big servers like mastodon.social have already "met" most accounts because lots of people there follow them. A smaller server might simply never have received a particular person's posts, so their profile looks empty even if they're active. This is by design, to help save resources.
The fix is simple: Follow them.
From that point on, all their new posts will appear normally. Want to see an older post too? Paste that specific post's link into search and it'll load, or open the original URL of the profile.
This works for accounts anywhere in the fediverse, including Threads. (However, please note: Threads only shares posts from people who've turned on fediverse sharing, and it's not always real time, so don't worry if things don't show up right away)
So, an empty profile doesn't mean the person isn't active. Just search, follow, and you're set.

My wife just made her first contribution to our Mastodon fork. It's totally vibe-coded, but I'm still proud of her, because takes some understanding to give proper instructions for the issue, and it turned out to be an actual regression with a proper fix.

Hieman harmillista on, että tosi moni vertaistukiyhteisö toimii ainoastaan WhatsAppissa ja Facebookissa. Niistä jää sitten aivan kokonaan pois mieluummin.
Kevytmielisessä julkisessa postailussa Threads vielä menee, mutta henkilökohtaisemmissa ja arkaluonteisemmissa asioissa en luota Metaan pätkääkään. Tuntuu, että juuri Suomessa ei osata eikä haluta siirtyä neutraalimpiin kanaviin, jotka olisivat vähemmän siiloja tai korporaatio-omisteisia.

This is really cool.
I love using technology in all my hobbies, and when it comes to running, tech-driven gear is especially motivating. I enjoy exploring new routes, but sketching them by hand is tricky for a busy person and awkward to do on a phone.
Now my PT bot can analyze the areas I've already run and create new routes automatically using AI, Strava, and GraphHopper. All I need to do is upload the GPX file to WorkOutDoors or Runna on my watch and head out to conquer new paths...

This still bothers me, and I know complaining about it doesn't help, but it's frustrating that people are aware of how harmful algorithms, mainstream tools, and social media are, yet they still won't make the small effort to educate themselves, download a private browser or join the Fedi. The excuse that "we have no alternatives" is getting old.
