They're quite sneaky, since the registration reasons often sound totally believable. "I'm Rolle," I said out loud today after getting the approval for my new first name from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency of Finland. My coworker's reaction - "OK, and?" - said it all. I've always been Rolle.
People have called me Rolle since I was young - for at least 25 years - but especially my wife and family know me as Rolle. At work, everyone knows me as Rolle, too. My coworkers often introduce me as Rolle. Roni is someone else - that's not me, and I don't even always react when I hear that name. Hearing "Roni" has felt foreign to me for almost my whole life.
I've been thinking about this for years, if not decades, and now it's official: my first name, and the name I go by, is Rolle. Nothing has really changed, except now it feels good to introduce myself without having to explain, "I'm called Rolle", every time.
There's not really a special story behind the name. My last name starts with the letter L, and back in the day there were several Ronis at the same school. I had to come up with something, since I didn't want to be "Roni L." or "the other Roni." The L in my last name probably somehow led to the nickname. My first website, around the turn of the millennium, was called Rolleweb, although renamed to Rollemaa (the Rolle Land or Rolle's land) - it still exists today, also available on Fediverse: @nprofile…lfuu.

I hate virality.
I've been online since 1998, and the first decade or so was great, so peaceful. Of course, even back then, occasionally some douchebags would comment on my posts, wondering why I liked electronic music when the guitar is the most beautiful instrument in the world. This was back when I was a little kid. But there was little to no toxicity like on today's internet.
I've gained followers and influence while posting a lot during the social media era. After 2015 or so, posts started getting visibility because of the algorithms that continued to "improve". And that changed everything. I became more and more anxious because my posts started popping up everywhere, and followers started accumulating. When I left Twitter, I was nearing 10k followers without doing much. My regular posts got constantly shit flies around them, judging and reviewing things I post about.
Meta, Reddit, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok, all commercial platforms, suffer from this algorithmic brain rot. Your regular posts and the things you're proud of might suddenly go viral, and all kinds of assholes come to bring you down to make themselves feel better. Without recommendation algorithms, those lifeless losers would never get the chance. Without algorithms, we would have a fair game, without singling out or targeting specific individuals.
I need to be present in the Fediverse more often and cut the time I spend in other places. But there's no easy solution. I'm learning this the hard way over and over again.
I often wish it was the early 2000s again, no algorithms, no shitflies.

@nprofile…292m Minulla on yleistynyt ahdistuneisuushäiriö, ja kyllä, kärsin myös ajoittaisista paniikkikohtauksista. Niitä nykyään enää tulevia vain todella satunnaisesti tai stressaavissa tilanteissa. Öisin, silloin kun haluaisi nukkua, väsyttää, mutta aivot käyvät ylikierroksilla.
Meditointi- ja hengitysappit ovat auttaneet, mutta usein unohtuvat. Olen kokenut että eipä näiden ehkäisemiseen taida olla muuta ihmelääkettä kuin pyhästä kolminaisuudesta huolehtiminen: uni, ravinto, liikunta.

Why do I feel the need to always build something?

Just finished optimizing and checking things after being away from this machine in particular for a while. Our server stack could theoretically handle 5k more registered users and about 1500-2000 monthly active users before we'd need to start thinking about scaling up.
Right now, we have 889 users and around 410 monthly active ones and we're running at roughly 25-30% capacity. Plenty of space to grow.
We're federating with nearly 42000 other servers, which is actually the heaviest part of running an instance, not the local users. Every boost, reply, and follow across the fediverse adds work for our servers.
It was never my intention to grow this server this much or even have this many users, but now we have regular people, authors, political parties, organizations, YouTubers, and more. I'm still amazed about this. Yet I'm keeping a low profile because, even though we have our own admin team, at the end of the day this is still my hobby project organized by me and my wife.
That said, I've done my best to keep things as flexible as possible, and our finances are stable. I'm really glad my "hobby project" has brought so much joy to so many people.

Koskaan aiemmin en ole nähnyt yhtä paljon raivo- tai koukutusansoja netissä. Meta on hyvin osannut taitavasti kouluttaa käyttäjänsä myös kaivamaan infoa toisistaan, jota voivat myydä eteenpäin. Kaikki ikään kuin tietävät, että Threadsiin kuuluu postata tällaisia kyselyitä.
Tiedostan olevani tavallaan osa ongelmaa.

FYI, heads up to my Fedi friends. I've applied for a name change. Instead of Roni Rolle Laukkarinen, I'll be known as Rolle Roni Laukkarinen, with Rolle as my first and calling name. After all, that's what I've been called most of my life. My mom gave me her blessing. Online communities matter. I've always been a bit of a hermit in real life, but being part of online communities makes me feel more complete, even though I rarely meet anyone in person.
I use Zwift to run virtually when the weather is bad or I just don't feel like going outside. I rarely chat while running, but this time I ran with some pro athletes again, and the team leader wanted to send greetings to a buddy fighting cancer. I sent her some Finnish SISU.
Seeing those constant support messages appear right at the 10-minute mark (he asked us to send them all at once for a photo) got me emotional. Such a unique, sweaty run.

What I mean specifically are these endless toggles everywhere. Click-click-click-click. Before it was just a click.
Also, why change the most used hashtags into a horizontal list? And what's with that huge button to show more pinned items? What was wrong with the old setup? The carousel wasn't great either, but I liked the version that showed them one below the other.
What problems are we actually trying to solve here?
I know these aren't shipped yet, but does anyone actually use Figma and discuss UX?

I won't be able to use the flag EXPERIMENTAL_FEATURES=profile_redesign for a while. I do not have time to redesign ours. I really think the Mastodon core team has made some poor choices lately, UX anti-patterns are popping up again. Last time, they changed post visibility under a modal that required up to six clicks and added unnecessary cognitive strain. I even sent a PR suggestion, but they rejected it.
Right now we have "Posts" and "Posts and replies" in tabs, but in the experimental profile redesign there's a "Posts" toggle that contains "Replies" and "Posts" toggles underneath it. It adds extra clicks and combines interface elements under one toggle, which just creates more friction. What's wrong with traditional tabs?
I wish they'd stop breaking what already works well. Honestly, as a long-time front-end developer, I don't understand some of these design choices. Hopefully, these experimental features will mature a bit before they make it to stable.

Wow, there are a lot of breaking changes in the latest Mastodon nightly. I'm a bit surprised by some of the UI choices being made. I haven't been able to refactor all the code in Mastodon Bird UI yet, and I already have quite a bit of technical debt. This won't make my life any easier. I hope I get some breathing room before 4.6.0 is released.

Over the years, I've realized how far we've drifted from the original idea of the World Wide Web. These days, it feels more like a corporate, big-tech web. I think there's real value in self-hosting as much as possible while still using major platforms, especially when you can pick more European and reasonable options.
People often forget that YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram were once independent companies, not owned by Meta or Google. Google was meant to be ad-free, and OpenAI was founded as a non-profit research organization, etc.
We'll probably never return to that vision, but I'm glad I own most my data and have about half of my tech self-hosted and open-sourced. It's only a dent, but I'm proud of that dent.

Your examples seem to make this behavior look somehow acceptable, but why exactly? Your cases are extremely rare on Fedi. I've only seen them from people who tried it for a minute and left back in 2022.

Minulle on jankutettu "kriittisestä massasta" vuodesta 2022 kun tänne siirryin, että sitä ei muka Fedissä ole. Miten niin, millä perusteella? "Kriittinen massa" on mielestäni se, että keskustelua syntyy ihan pirusti koko ajan riippumatta siitä mitä postaa. En muista algoritmivapaan Twitterin (2007-2010) tällaista tapahtuneen enää missään muualla. Meta-alustoilla ja LinkedInissä etenkin käy usein niin, että algoritmi ignoraa tärkeät asiapostaukset täysin.
Harmillista, että jengi ei tajua tätä. Vapaassa somessa on hyvä olla.

My January running challenge is now completed - 31 days of running behind me. The rule was simple: run at least 2 km every day, any style. I definitely didn't always feel like running. Many times I ended up doing my 2 km on the treadmill (Zwift). It was nice not having to think "should I run today", but rather "what kind of run should I do today?".
I decided to finish with a long trail run despite the freezing temperatures (approximately -16 °C, equivalent to 3.2 °F, got a bit colder during the run). My snacks and my body froze before we even reached the halfway point, but I still enjoyed it!
Total distance In January: 163.1 km.

I can't help it, I love beautiful, modern, minimal designs. Most user interfaces just don't appeal to me. Book apps, in particular, often feel old-fashioned. There's nothing wrong with old things though; retro tech from the 80s and 90s has its own charm, and people really knew how to make beautiful things back then.
But bad UI is a different story, it's clumsy, built with off-the-shelf frameworks without much thought, and often lacks proper design guidelines, plan or structure. That's why I can't use Bookwyrm, for example.
I read a lot and have mostly been using https://getbookshelf.com on iOS along with a CSV file since leaving Goodreads. Right now, I'm checking out alternatives. Even StoryGraph doesn't quite do it for me. https://margins.app looks promising, and Bookcover is okay but missing some features.
So, if in another world I decided to make my own fork and app, contribute to Bookwyrm, and completely refresh its UI like I did for Mastodon with the Mastodon Bird UI - what would you think of that?

TikTok getting MAGA spawns new social media services.
UpScrolled is apparently built from scratch as a centralized platform, not based on ActivityPub or ATProto. They explicitly state that current decentralized protocols don't deliver what they need for a video-forward app, whatever that means. It's run by Palestinian-Australian developer Issam Hijazi with support from the Tech for Palestine incubator, launched in June 2025. Positioned as an Instagram and TikTok alternative without shadowbanning, with chronological feeds.
UpScrolled saw a massive surge after TikTok's US ownership restructure in January 2026, when Oracle and other US investors took controlling stake while ByteDance retained only 19.9%. Some users accused TikTok of censoring posts critical of ICE under the new ownership, which drove people to alternatives.
Monnett is also built from scratch, centralized, with no federation. Run by Monnet Social SA based in Luxembourg, founded in 2024 by a team of European technologists and activists. It's their answer to surveillance capitalism, GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany, with user-controlled algorithm sliders and no psychological profiling. Basically the European sovereignty play.
W is the newest one, announced at Davos just days ago. Another centralized platform built from scratch, run by Anna Zeiter, former eBay chief privacy officer. It's legally a subsidiary of We Don't Have Time, a Swedish climate activist organization backed by IKEA, Volvo, Unilever, WWF, and Salesforce. The advisory board includes former German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler and Club of Rome chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève. Requires identity verification with photo and ID to combat bots. European-hosted data only.
The name of W supposedly stands for "We" with two hidden V's for "Values" and "Verified" - and they cheerfully admit that W coming before X in the alphabet is "a welcome coincidence". Beta in February, public launch late 2026. Zeiter said the platform would already count as a success if "political Brussels" posts on W instead of X.

Dayflow is a native macOS app (SwiftUI) that records your screen at 1 FPS, analyzes it every 15 minutes with AI, and generates a timeline of your activities with summaries. It's lightweight (25MB app size) and uses ~100MB of RAM and <1% cpu.

As a pacifist, what I love most about the Fediverse is how it feels like a shared search for peace. We have Caturday, when everyone posts cat pictures every Saturday. There's Mosstodon, which is all about sharing beautiful photos of moss and nature. And we have SilentSunday, where people post calm outdoor and nature photos. Even with all the chaos in the world, the Fediverse has a way of calming my mind.

Imagine if someone sold "vibe surgery packages" that could remove your appendix. Or if a marketing agency offered "vibe electrical installations." Would you buy from them?
For some reason, it's considered fine for non-technical people to sell coding services. In construction, that would be illegal work. In healthcare, it would be quackery.
AI is a great tool, but you still need to understand code, because every line is a liability. Very few people take information security and accessibility as seriously as they should.

As a weekend project, I'm going to install a fourth Linux distro on my desktop PC to get some gaming going! Batocera is a Linux distro that supports over 220 gaming platforms and consoles, including MS-DOS, PS1-PS4, and various controllers directly.
I've built a couple of custom handheld consoles for retro gaming using RetroArch and EmulationStation, and we have an arcade machine with a JAMMA circuit board at the office, but I haven't tried Batocera before. Let the games begin!

It's exactly one year since the Mastodon HOA caused me a mental breakdown by verbally attacking me and falsely accusing me of scraping data into a database (which I didn't do, it was just a single index.html file using a public, existing mastodon.social API). That incident led to the shutdown of Fedi On Fire, a fun project I had. In their eyes I will forever be a "Techbro Asshole".

Tried Kagi Search for a few days. The issue (like with many alternative search engines) is that it's too slow. I want search results to appear instantly with my 1 Gbps connection, not after 1-2 seconds, but immediately when I press Enter.
Qwant is even worse, and DDG's accuracy isn't great. So I'm sticking with Google, but with aggressive anti-tracking measures.

After leaving Twitter, I just wanted to bring back that 2019 feel. Some UI and UX patterns have already been proven to work, and it's great (unlike Twitter was) Mastodon is open source so I can customize it.
I've also submitted some suggestions to the core, since the only thing I'm still missing is the compose box, the rest I've built into my fork.

We've reverted the visibility selection modal back to a dropdown, like it used to be. The modal required six clicks and was a disaster in terms of accessibility and usability.

In 2022, before starting my own instance, I was worried it would feel like a burden, one more thing to be responsible for. But I've come to realize it's been one of the most enjoyable projects of my life. Sure, there's more pressure now that there are hundreds of daily users, but I get to do things my way, experiment with alphas, and learn so much about Ruby, JavaScript, React, job queues, sysops, and more. And then there's the social side of it all.
I've been focusing on Mastodon Bird UI, but lately I've also started digging into the Mastodon core. There have been a few things I've wanted to change. I'm constantly improving my skills and picking up new things. I also try to take it easy and not stress too much.
Of course, I don't always have time for everything. I get tired and sometimes lose focus, I'm human. But I never stay down for long.
I want to thank our users for being so patient with me. There will be bugs. There will be changes. But I'm all in and doing my best. Thanks for being here.

Most of the theming issues have been fixed on our instance. Sorry for the inconvenience caused by the layout bugs… I've been pretty stressed out and dealing with ongoing migraines and postdromes, so maybe it wasn't the best idea to take on this huge task today. Still, about 90% is done, and the rest will be fixed here in production.
I'll push the MVP version of the new theming system soon. Again, sorry, I'm trying my best! The fixing of the fuckening continues…

Many people recommend Brave as a browser these days. I just tried it again after a while.
The good: it has a built-in ad blocker and blocks YouTube ads completely.
The bad: it's noticeably slow at loading regular web pages, even with a 1 Gbps connection. And that crypto shit nowbody needs. Still too bloated as a web browser, like most of them.
I've gotten so used to the ultra-slim ungoogled-chromium setup, with a working YouTube ad blocker and full anti-tracking features, that browsing feels as fast as opening local files. No other browser matches that.
It's sad that you have to be a nerd to get a truly fast, ad- and tracking-free browsing experience these days. Most browsers only give you one or the other.

Duden toiminnan yhdestoista vuosikymmen oli hämmentävästi samaan aikaan sekä rankka että palkitseva, henkilökohtaisesti ja yrittäjänä. Siksi viimeisin täysi tilikausi oli meille eräänlainen "välitilikausi", toipumista muutoksista ja omilleen pääsemistä. Onhan sillä vissi muutos, kun esimerkiksi puolet omistajaporukasta vaihtaneet maisemia ja uutta porukkaa tullut taloon. On myös huomattavan paljon vaikeampaa kirjoittaa avoimesti firman blogiin silloin kun ei mene hyvin. Mutta yhdenkään vuoden katsausta ei olla skipattu, eikä skipata nytkään. Madonluvut on taas avattu.
Kahdennentoista tilikauden tulos jäi tavoitteesta, mutta liikevaihto nousi lähes miljoonaan (960kEUR). Se on kova saavutus pienestä liikkeelle lähteneeltä WordPress-talolta, joka on silti pitänyt kiinni arvoistaan ja hinnastaan.
Alalla on kova kilpailu ja Dude ei useinkaan voi kilpailla hinnoilla, kun ei olla välttämättä se halvin toimija. Alan jatkuva hintojen polkeminen herättää ristiriitaisia ajatuksia: eikö palvelulla, kattauksella, laadulla, pitkäikäisyydellä, kestävyydellä ja ylipäätään tekemisen tasolla ole enää merkitystä? Vain hinta ratkaisee? Läpyskät viereen ja halvin toimija tekemään? Vierityspalkin Perttua lainatakseni, "Nähty hintataso ei voi olla kannattavaa ja kestävää, ainakaan jos verot maksaa Suomeen". Toivon, että alan taantumasta päästään ylös, edes jollain tasolla. Jos ei muulla, niin kustannustehokkaammilla ratkaisuilla. Niiden kehittelyyn tilanne meidätkin pakottaa.
Mutta elämme arvojemme mukaisesti: Läpinäkyvyys, Laatu, vastuullisuus, rohkeus, välittäminen, kehittyminen. Teknistä velkaa on kertynyt ja sitä kurotaan parhaillaan, toivon mukaan saamme pian uudet Gutenberg-lohkot tuttuun tapaan GitHubiin kaikille jakoon. Monta asiaa kehittyy yhtä aikaa.

Tein sen virheen, että kävin lukemassa mielipiteitä "aidan toiselta puolelta", Facebookista ja X:stä. Ihan käsittämätöntä, miten niin monen mielestä on OK tai jopa suotavaa tehdä syrjiviä eleitä, käyttää syrjiviä sanoja, kieltä ja ilmaisuja. "Cancelointi", "woke", "loukkaantuminen", "hyvesignalointi" on kuulemma sairasta.
Tekee surulliseksi, että ihan tavallinen kohteliaisuus ja ystävällisyys on monelta unohtunut. Tulee mieleen koulukiusaamisajat. "Kyllähän vitsailua pitää kestää".

Kyllä minä vaan sanon, että Mastodonissa on niin ihanaa verrattuna muihin somepalveluihin. Hauska oli taas "toisaalla" keskustelu, jossa joku suositteli hajautettuja vaihtoehtopalveluita, johon reaktio: "Kyllä sekin pilataan".
Mastodonia ei voi "pilata". Mekin on fediblokattu monta öyhöinstanssia ja ei-öyhöinstansseilla eivät öyhöt pärjää. Koen että Fediversumi ja Mastodon ovat aidosti moderoituja alustoja, kun automaation tai yhden tiimin sijaan moderoijia on tuhansia - käyttäjät itse.

I like making my Mastodon fork behave exactly the way I want. One feature I miss from other platforms is videos that autoplay and loop muted. I'm going to implement that in my fork, just like on those other platforms. It will respect the system-wide reduce motion setting.
My goal is to keep Mastodon core as close to vanilla as possible and not overload it with features like glitch-soc, just improve the things I want, both in UI and functionality.
Being a MastoAdmin is nice, you get to build your own tools and learn new things.

Mastodon Bird UI support for Mastodon v4.6.0 with CSS properties is coming soon. The theme will also be modularized using SCSS partials to match Mastodon's new style infrastructure.
The build process will include npm scripts and Parcel, making the theme ultra-portable for any Mastodon instance, whether added through the Custom CSS textarea or directly by a Mastodon admin.
I'll also create a simple bash script for Mastodon admins to enable the theme as a selectable option more easily than the current fork-and-cut method.
This is not an easy feat, but definitely worth it.
