Faircamp 2.0 is now feature complete. (~˘▽˘)~
In the next days I'll be resolving a handful of remaining minor blockers, then I'll start gradually rolling out beta test packages.
Last feature to have landed today was 2.0's slightly revised tags customization system and its integration in the desktop application (https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/commit/283a84df29533658f77ac3888d4279105c0ba54f, pictured).

Work on #faircamp 2.0 is currently tilting fast from "a dozen days to wrap up a single problem" to "wrapping up a dozen problems each day". Feels great to finally arrive in the territory of completing things. ( ◡‿◡ *)
Today and yesterday evening I've been working out some of the most crucial icons that the graphical editor still needs to communicate "outgoing/incoming/local/default settings". Attached some excerpts from the process.

Random #faircamp 2.0 development updates:
Over the last days I implemented adaptive theming in css/js on the generated sites themselves - i.e. if enabled the site is automatically shown in dark/light according to the visitor's system preferences, but the theme can also be manually toggled in the footer (button shown in the screenshot). For maximum compatibility across browsers I decided not to use light-dark() for this, instead opting for a little bit of css self-torment ... let's just say I'm glad that's over ^^ ("space toggles" to the rescue!).
Furthermore, today I started working on an implementation for automated site migration from faircamp 1.x to 2.x, built into both the cli and desktop applications. I'm more than a little anxious about this escalating in terms of complexity and effort, but it's kinda important, so I put on my sunglasses and venture bravely into the unknown. Let's see what waits ahead. ( ◡‿◡ *)

Today I bought faircamp.org :) – the website and everything will be gradually moving there for the 2.0 release over the next weeks and months! \o/
This is for one a signal of commitment and that I intend for faircamp to be around in the long term (I've been at it for 5 years already :)), but also, it'd be nice to co-own and co-operate the domain with the community at some point in the future, hence also the gradual move away from my own domain.

I only ever witnessed Drew from a distance online, so it's ultimately not my call to validate him. I will say though that the picture he paints - both in the best and the worst - is true to what I've seen and read from him over the years. I like to believe that people can change, and as such, I have a ton of respect for what he has written in this post. Being an asshole is cheap and easy (and in my own ways I've not always been my best self either), but writing something like that ... really takes a different kind of person. I wish him all the best.

word. so many things I can relate to. :)
A few years ago I permanently removed the SIM card from my smartphone (deleting all communication channels on it, signal etc.), and permanently moved the card into my dumbphone. It took a bit of time, but gradually my brain began to understand that the smartphone "couldn't hurt me anymore", it turned into an object, much like a brick – the bad magic had been exorcised. I happily use it (mostly offline and somewhat like a laptop) now, turn on, turn off, but only when I need it for specific things.
My SIM-enabled dumbphone on the other hand, being extremely inconvenient to use and just barely useful for anything at all (calls/sms only) never aquired that bad magic – it remained something with a threat level akin to an electric doorbell, annoying people might ring occasionally, but then life goes on without much emotional turmoil. Yay.
But yeah, all in all, things remain complex as ever. Dumbphone life requires a high level of privilege and brings its own hundred headaches. I am forever in awe with that professor I read about whose website at the university department supposedly says "I don't use email. You can't contact me.", that sounds like a higher plane of existence to me. (*_ _)人

In exactly two weeks our 4th https://permacomputing.net meetup is taking place - and notably "on the eve of the end of Windows 10".
Our plan for the evening:
- Crisis counseling for Windows 10 users: Bring your questions (and if you want, computer) if you are affected by Microsoft's declared end of the support of Windows 10. Together we can talk about our options in this situation (Do I need a new computer? Are there alternative ways out? etc.) and you can also try out free alternatives to Windows, if you like!
- Afterwards we'll watch a recording of the talk "Permacomputing 101" by Devine from Hundred Rabbits, recently presented at Critical Signals 2025, and have a bit of talk and discussion around it.

Results in a search engine always require scrutiny (whether provided by an AI or not), so I was pondering the difference in how search engine results fail us when they are, or aren't, provided by an AI. After all, somebody might (and probably does) argue that AI search results are no more untrustworthy than their predecessor! But, I think the stark difference is that there is actually something very predictable and comprehensible in the way that search results have historically been wrong: They are completely submerged in their source context (and as far as mainstream AI goes, erasing this context in the name of convenience is the very nature of what's going on). Each site that offers me results in a "traditional" search as we know it conveys intent: A technical article from a startup is going to serve recruitment ads, but they have an incentive to serve me quality. A wikipedia article might be target of history revisionists, so this is where my attention could be. A fresh stack overflow post will be swarming with gamification-reward-addicted posters that will serve low quality advice, I will be wary. There is a skill in navigating this, it can be learned!
AI results however? It's me against a black box - likely operated by profit motives - now. How am I supposed to reason, to retain my grip on reality in this?

Regarding "decentralized spotify": I can see the appeal in Spotify's convenience (or at least I think that is one of the least disputable aspects of why people like it), but beyond that I'd really caution to make "the Spotify model" (whatever that exactly is) the blueprint and vision for music listening culture and distribution online. E.g. even the central pay-per-stream concept: Do we really want that? Reducing the (monetary) worth of audio works to "number needs to go up", with all the ugly incentives it breeds? From my observations so far I'm getting the feeling this model isn't as beneficial in reality as it looks on paper, to put it mildly. Therefore I think the question in that vision ("decentralized spotify") has to be this: Spotify in what sense exactly? @npub17wn…9s6v

Delightful observation I keep making (exponentially more often?) in the last years:
Copy-pasting and adapting from my own (hand-written, if you will) software corpus is a _huge, reciprocal productivity boost_.
[x] I constantly build on and expand my own repertoire
[x] I understand (or at least once understood :)) everything I reuse
[x] Re-used code can have issues but I have full trust that it was written with best intent, to the best of my ability
[x] Reused code is improved/refined with each iteration
[x] Improved code goes around to be re-integrated with the source eventually
[x] I learn tremendously in the process
[x] I don't need to pay anyone for this
[x] No new datacenters need to be built for this
[x] This gets better every year

The upcoming Hyper 8 release (0.19, probably in a week or two) is going to introduce four different feeds in one go: Atom, Plain RSS, Podcast RSS and Media RSS.
As a visitor on a Hyper 8 site you'll be able to subscribe to the site itself but also selectively to every subcollection and playlist on a site.
In the coming weeks sometime I'll also be implementing audio-only media/formats, with that there will probably also come a feed differentiation that allows people to subscribe to audio-only feeds.
In effect, hyper8 becomes a (video and/or audio) podcasting platform¹ with this as well.

Spent the afternoon yesterday diagnosing and fixing apple-specific issues in #faircamp and #hyper8 (I can confirm that indeed "iOS/Safari is the new internet explorer" :/)

Minirelease for Feber (a simple, self-hostable, portable group calendar): 1.3.0 \o/
Although #feber does not support multiple calendars per installation, it can easily be installed multiple times under a single domain (simply copy the installation files into multiple subdirectories), and this release is all about officially supporting this by isolating the (php) sessions across different calendars (which previously was not the case). Many thanks to Thom for communicating this usecase and issue to me!
Also included in this release are some tweaks and use of gender neutral language ("account" rather than "user") for the french translations (thank you @npub1xdk…8qkr!), which I'd like to extend to the other locales (and internal translation keys etc.) when I finally get to it. :)

- During the step "Backup (...) First the old key pair (public & secret):", after the command "gpg --export-secret-keys --armor BF3B5AFCD4480E60 | gpg --symmetric --armor > BF3B5AFCD4480E60.sec" it says "Latest command will ask you for a password 3 times: the first two correspond to the symmetric encryption and the password has to be exactly the same the first two times; third time corresponds to the key pair’s password (the one you set up while creating the new pair)." This slightly confused me, for two reasons: 1) We are exporting the _old_ key pair, but it says "third time corresponds to the key pair’s password (the one you set up while creating the _new_ pair)", so I first was wondering if we are somehow using the new key to encrypt the old key. (but in the end I think I gathered that we just need the old key's passphrase to get it exported here, the mention of "new" is probably an accident). 2) The order seems to be reversed (?) We first export the key (so the first password we enter should be the passphrase of the key itself, and then we pipe the output to gpg --symmetric, and this one then (2nd+3rd passphrase) is the separate passphrase we just use to protect the key for external storage safekeeping?

Thank you so much for this excellent guide, helped me enormously to rotate my keys, and I learned a lot in the process too!
I'm sharing a few notes I made - feel free to incorporate or ignore them, whichever way you feel like! :)

- In the command "$ gpg --export --armor BF3B5AFCD4480E60> BF3B5AFCD4480E60.pub" there seems to be a missing space (next to '>'), it was probably intended to be "gpg --export --armor BF3B5AFCD4480E60 > BF3B5AFCD4480E60.pub"
- The command "rm cat ~/.gnupg/openp..." probably accidentally contains the "cat" and was intended to be "rm ~/.gnupg/openp..."
- In the command "gpg -a --gen-revoke BF3B5AFCD4480E60 > BF3B5AFCD4480E60.rev" we create a revokation certificate for the old key. Towards the end of the process I found myself wondering if this file should be kept (and why), a short note on that would be great.
- Likewise to the previous point, I found myself wondering why we are keeping the old key files at all, this would also be fantastic to have just a sentence on.

I just released Feber 1.1.3! (that's "a simple, self-hostable group calendar", see https://simonrepp.com/feber)
This patch mainly solves a security-related oversight from feber's first days - if you share your calendar with a public audience, or use it to organize highly private or secret things, I recommend updating timely, otherwise just whenever you get to it - the impact of the issue is rather limited.
Also, did you know that #feber is available as a Yunohost app? Eric Gaspar made this happen (with support from @npub1xdk…8qkr and Alexandre Aubin) - many thanks! \o/
Also, I might do a smaller feature release these next days too, let's see if time permits. ( ^◡^)

I just contemplated for a minute how awesome it is that @npub1fh7…ee83 exists. I was reformatting the link to codeberg on my (these days empty-ish) github profile and it felt like the most normal thing that most of my repositories now live on an independent, community-led platform ... but it's totally not!
Some people set out to make it happen and put in so much energy and personal time and resources, and they made it happen! And still every day there's a few incredibly dedicated core volunteers behind the scenes, keeping things running for us all, and hundreds of members providing funds and oversight, and devs building forgejo and so on ... what a marvel of the free software movement. Also love the political energy behind it and that people are mostly very clear on the mission: Tech is political. Code is political. And we better make damn sure we make it good politics!! (•̀ᴗ•́)و
