Lightning some distance away, but the wet sand typical of Assynt transmits the electrical energy pretty effortlessly. When that hit the earthing spike, our #offgrid power went down, safely caught by the RCD units, which needed resetting.
But as usual, it's blown the ADSL router. Lightning current delights in using BT's ancient cables to cause havoc. We have a spare, so we're back up and running.
It's ironic that "official" infrastructure can't handle these events, when our DIY home power does.

The favoured V sighting mark into Preas Loch, wearing its late-March clothing. That far reedbed used to be far more dense, but has had a receding hairline for the last few years. I wonder what will happen to it this year.
I should perhaps add that the horizon, according to the camera, was straight, though it looks skew, a good example of when I should not have trusted the technology. But as usual, unless otherwise stated, this is straight (or skew) from the camera.

Yet another hivemind request regarding VoWiFi.
We depend on this here. My phone has worked well until recently. Now it makes a call, but when the other side answers, the call cuts out. It also makes no ring tone on the phone, but rings on the other side. SMS texts work perfectly over VoWiFi on both directions. Incoming calls don't work. Spent some time with the mobile provider yesterday. They say the issue is not on their side.
Any ideas more than "use flight mode" etc?

Had to set up herself's new-to-her* Samsung phone yesterday. I ended up with a list of crud to disable over 400 entries long by the end.
This was using the adb command line utility.
Of that 400+ list, it looked like the majority successfully disabled the bloat.
So much mega-corp nonsense, and they're in it together.
It also took most of the day
* - still not sure of the value, but not-this-year's phones in apparently unused condition can be got for a fraction of the cost when new.

Had to dig a bit to get the car to the charger in Lochinver. The roads are mostly clear, but VERY single track, with snow build up on either side, but the car park where the chargers are is an ice rink. I'm knackered from scooping icy snow.

Wow, it's frustrating looking at the feed from @nprofile…pk8u how other areas are getting improvements to their fibre connections, when here there are no plans to lay fibre at all, in spite of public money for this being gifted to the incumbent monopoly (used in areas more profitable for them), against a background of having just been in South Africa, and seeing the most rural of places with fibre to the premises.

First stop, in a fabulous and already-hot morning, was an alleged waterfall. When we got there, someone just leaving said there was no water in the river at all. So we decided against the walk, mainly owing to the baking heat.
But there was a lot of vegetation. I think this one plant is or was called Bushman's Candle, as it is waxy enough to light.
We were delaying going further as we knew that from now on, the heat would intensify

Also good news on this trip away is finding out that my dispatcher script in NetworkManager that starts wireguard if we're not on the home network works well. All home systems accessible automatically except for a router whose routes I forgot to set, and my own DNS in use. A working DNS too.

It seems unlikely she was jailed for a tweet. She was jailed for incitement to cause harm in the context of people causing the exact harms she was promoting. It seems reasonable that a free society need not tolerate that.

@nprofile…73ne Ah yes, the bathroom. In our case 15cm difference in one plane than the other, a rhombus shaped room, sub-optimal when you need to install a shower that requires a right angle for the doors to fit correctly.
Also, I carefully made sure some of the down pipes were vertical, to find several cm difference against the adjacent wall, top to bottom. Yes, the wall leans in quite considerably.
Just go with it. Nature abhors straight lines.

There's been an unfortunate person in the area the last little while. For various reasons, some unknown, the ideal safety nets have failed.
But let me say, I am so proud of so many of our fellow residents here, who have exhibited concern, the polar opposite of seeing her as a problem, going so far as making sure she was safe, rested & not hungry, at their own expense.
While it's easy to be overcome by the plight of this poor person, the good that others have shown is truly uplifting.

OK, this should have a Grumpy Old Man content warning.
Travelling down the A9 today to the Woolly Good Gathering Yarm show in Edinburgh. There were 8 - count 'em - 8 sets of dreaded coned-off areas, 7 of which had speed restrictions.
Of these 8, 6 had no-one and nothing other than cones visible near them.
The one that didn't have the speed restriction had workpeople really close to the carriageway.
There's something about the A9 that makes officialdom even more insane.

@nprofile…lwgl Two years into ownership here, and with one or two exceptions, when we calculated wrongly, the worst of that initial anxiety will pass. I've taken the car down to single figures on a few occasions quite* happily.
Someone suggested the trick of using a distance-to setting on the satnav against the guess-o-meter of the range remaining. Gives the fear a basis.
It's just different.

Project ConnectTheLastHomelyHouse continues.
We got a Mikrotik router/dish combo as an incremental way to test 4G connections. The existing test of a very cheap router & omnidirectional antenna got us through the last few days of no ADSL, proving the value. This combo also tells me exactly which mast the signal is coming from.
But I cannot get the Mikrotik to connect to that mast. It feels like I'm doing something wrong or daft, but the documentation is truly awful.

Today's Catch-22 of modernity:
Contacted our ISP re the dead ADSL. Explained the line is noisy, so that's probably the problem.
Them: Oh, then you must place a telephone fault.
It's the same company, by the way. So I place a telephone fault.
Them: We've tested the line and there's nothing wrong with it.
Me: I don't care about the phone, we don't use it, I need the ADSL
Them: Well we'll get a BT engineer to check the phone, but if it's OK, you'll have to pay a call-out fee.
Me: ADSL-splutter 😱

Well, just in time for the ADSL connection to pack in, the Mikrotik we ordered just yesterday turned up at lunch time.
Now the omnidirectional antenna we have as a test tells us exactly what mast the signal is coming from. But do you think I can sync with that dish?
I must be doing something wrong, I think, so I'll actually try to find a manual to read.
In theory a BT techie arrives on Thursday, so we'll see.

@nprofile…x759 People at this event now grabbing me re the OSA. Most are burying their heads in the sand. At least some seem to me to be in scope. One person just laughed, but what that meant I don't know. Quite depressing really. This is a digital sustainability event.
Still glad I chose to include it briefly and mention Neil's work. Should help the non-ostriches.

@npub1m26…2jhh Not seen that, and really only know zfs in the server context, hence the question. Also, that zfs seems to shine best with multiple disks, not usual in a laptop. Such a pity about its licencing, isn't it?

(But, serious questions. What is the benefit you're hoping for from zfs and will it be a memory hog on laptop? Or maybe is this really about the technical exercise, in which case, happy hacking. Whatever, keep the posts going.)
