I don't know about “best” for gaming, but I've playing both Steam and non-Steam games on Debian since forever. Steam does a pretty good job at providing extended compatibility thanks to its Linux runtimes that ship with older libraries for compatibility with older games, although I've rarely seen games fail for that reason outside of Steam (although it does happen).

it's hard to understand that the Fediverse gives what you put in it, when one's brain has been rotted by the kind of dopamine addiction the algorithmically manipulatable platforms can provide. If you abuse a platform as write-only medium, why would you expect anyone to READ you?
Ironically, the Fediverse can actually provides plenty of engagement. But one has to actually actively engage with it to get it back.

customer trust is an extremely important point, and I would add to that another one: Valve doesn't even need the Frame itself to succeed. One of the things that Valve can afford to do and Meta cannot is “iterative improvements”. If you look at the history of the Valve hardware programs, the takeaway is that they don´t actually need to succeed as long as they're a meaningful increment and an experience Valve can learn from. Benefits of being privately own, I guess?

The previous chapter, with a strong historical review of the last decade plus of events, is still at
https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/
One thing I would like to add to this second part is a directory of interesting #indieWeb examples of XSLT usage. Suggestions welcome.

#Apple is no better than #Google at stewarding the #openWeb. #Mozilla has abundantly shown in the last years that they are just controlled opposition, and the amount of their allegedly restricted resources they waste on invasive features nobody wants shows that they can't be trusted in any way to defend the users' interest. Currently, their only redeeming quality is that they haven't removed support for uBlock Origin and other #adblockers from their browsers —a meager point.

2025-11-08 07:48:58 UTC

- reply

#Chrome's deprecation of #XSLT is just the next step in the decade-long efforts by #Google to kill an open, independent web (reminder that I've collected some of that history here <https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/>). The #WebKit developers at #Apple or the prone #Mozilla developers agreeing on this choice detracts nothing from the argument.
#openWeb #indieWeb

2025-11-08 07:45:47 UTC

- reply

There's an older parallel here for when #Mozilla helped #Google in their path to kill #RSS (note that this #XSLT is *also* about that) by removing the Live Bookmark feature. At the time, the excuse was that the implementation was incompatible with some important code changes that were happening at the same time, but the fact that support could be trivially brought in via extension showed that the issue there wasn't technical, but a matter of intent.

2025-11-08 07:43:53 UTC

- reply

Note that the #Chrome team could trivially ship the polyfill itself and nobody would have even _cared_ about the change in the way #XSLT support was implemented in browser. This would have completely solved the “security” issue due to #Google leeching on a #FLOSS libraries without giving back. The fact that they haven't shows that the security issues in the libraries are just an excuse.
Any comment on this, @npub1gns…7sg5 ?

2025-11-08 07:15:45 UTC

- reply

Do not install the polyfill. Do not change your XML files to load it. Instead, flood their issue tracker with requests to bring back in-browser XSLT‌ support. Report failed support for XSLT as a broken in browsers, because this is not a website issue.

2025-11-08 07:13:12 UTC

This is a trillion-dollar company abusing their power to control the open web, and one it's catastrophic how even among the purported supporters of an open web there are people stanning for this choice because of their personal dislike of the piece of tech being forcefully obsoleted on false and flimsy premises.
A reminder that I recently wrote up a historical review on Google's efforts in this direction
https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/

2025-11-08 07:10:20 UTC

DO NOT COMPLY.
#Google is moving forward with its removal of #XSLT support instead of fixing their library and/or adopting a library that supports a more modern version of the XSLT standard.
The dishonest and incomplete reporting on their developer page omits any explanation on why they have not pursued the corect course of action, and is instead dumping on users and developers the task of compensating for the Chrome team choices:

I intentionally split at spaces because to detect which entry prevents the column from getting smaller, I have to look at any consecutive non-breakable substring. Admittedly this doesn't tell me which entries, though. Probably something like find | grep -E '\S{30)' would be better

2025-08-15 06:10:48 UTC

- reply

that's a pretty interesting way to approach the problem. I went with:
find -maxdepth 1 | tr ' ' '\n' | awk '{ print length($0) }' | sort -n | uniq -c
and this gives me the length of all space-separated substrings. Some interesting results there, including one which is 60 characters long!
I think I'll keep the overflow-wrap solution, but I should probably address these long names too 8-D

2025-08-14 13:10:29 UTC

- reply

Solved by setting the name column to
overlay-wrap: anywhere
Still wraps correctly in most cases, but it's managing to wrap whatever was preventing it earlier.

2025-08-14 10:41:24 UTC

- reply

The culprit is most likely a file or directory name that the layout engine thinks it cannot be wrapped better, but with thousands of entries it's hard to understand which one and why.

2025-08-14 10:40:34 UTC

I have a weird #webDev question #askFedi
I'm customizing the Apache directory index in XHTML mode (so no hard styling). The table is set to width: 100% with some padding via CSS. When I restrict the horizontal space below 825px, though, the central (Name) column doesn't shrink anymore, as if there was something preventing it from wrapping text more than it has, so the table overflows. Only happens in some directories. How do I find what's preventing the shrink/wrap?
