Carney was the person for the moment, but can that give him staying power? I kind of doubt it. We should make sure there is a leadership contest before the next election, but I fear it won't happen unless the Liberals lose one or at least fall back significantly.

It's a shame we don't have that anymore, and it has fallen victim to "business efficiency" and shareholder advocates demanding ever higher ROIs. As far as I can tell, AT&T was a private company until after the monopoly ruling and subsequent breakup in the early 1980s.
On the other hand, Bell Labs existed at a time of *fundamental* discoveries. The environment may have helped in achieving the discoveries earlier, but was not necessarily the only way these discoveries would have been made. Is it fair to mock Google, Apple, and Microsoft R&D for not producing anything equally monumental when perhaps there is nothing as significant left to discover? I know I'm setting myself up for "everything in physics has been discovered" quotes, but I'm talking about computing and communications, not grand theories. We are now working on new techniques, not new concepts.

Just watched "Johnny Mnemonic" for the very first time. My spouse loved the film when it came out in 1995 and was eager for me to see it, and I was interested in seeing another of Reeves's early work (just after Speed) and a William Gibson adaptation.
It fared better than expected, and after learning how much Sony interfered trying to capitalize on Speed, I wish they had also made a director's cut. It was originally intended to be a low-cost ironic take on science fiction films, but was recut by the studio to be an overly serious action film. Reeves was quoted as saying giving the wooden delivery of the lines was exhausting.
But there were so many elements I recognized in later video games that the movie lives on through them.

On TikTok I'm getting *many* videos from Chinese companies displaying their wares. One was from a garment factory showing the garments they make for Lululemon, and noting that the label is the last thing they put on. $18 without the label and emblem.
Another was targeted to Canadian viewers, where you could ship Chinese products to their warehouse, and that company would take care of shipping the product to Canada. They even showed you how to get the Alipay app to pay for everything.
My feelings are muddied with fear. The onslaught of convenience, quality, and low, low prices is so enticing. My spouse mentioned they have work to do on worker rights, but I wonder how they really compare to ours.

A bit of a thought dump on what's happening in my family right now:
My spouse has a Master's degree in Social Work and has been grateful to work in the community assisting people transitioning from long-term hospital care to home care. She works with a multidisciplinary team with a non-profit organization that originated the concept with the Ottawa Hospital, which has since saved the hospital system significant costs while providing better care, for the past four years.
On Monday her team found out that the Ottawa Hospital gave the new contract to a local for-profit company that is (likely the one) working for Queensway Carleton, a much smaller hospital, at a lower price. Her team will not receive new patients and will wind down over the next four months before they must find new work.
One has to wonder how a small for-profit undercuts an established non-profit. The likely possibilities are underpaying the staff, and grossly underestimating the amount of work required. My spouse's team has three full time social workers, compared to the private firm's one part-time social worker. The social worker is the first contact, assessing needs of the client (sometimes making mental health assessments) and helping them get further supports from the city, or placements in long term care as needed.
This situation will clearly backfire heavily for Ottawa Hospital. But we have to stand aside and watch the train wreck unfold. Laura-Lee is looking for new work now, but community work is hard to come buy, especially at the salary her degree and experience should command. We'll get through this, but it is stressful nonetheless. It certainly doesn't engender good will to the capitalist system.

I'm more motivated to finish PM Carney's book, "Value(s): Building a better world for all", and came across this section:
❝An advantage of the subjective approach to value is that it is neutral. Everything that is priced can be compared by means of a common, widely available standard, the market price. But from the perspective of welfare, it creates several issues.
First, whereas economic infrastructure and economic capital are usually priced, social infrastructure, social capital and natural capital generally are not. This can lead to underinvestment in what matters for wellbeing. In standard GDP accounting, government contributes no value added beyond public sector salaries. Measurement of (unpriced) outputs would better reflect both living standards and economic per-formance. What captures performance during the crisis? @nprofile…66c8 I made a useful update for people wondering how much land is needed for just solar panels. Solar co-exists with sheep and goats, who love the shade and eat the weeds around the panels. All of the US's energy needs could be met just by sheep and goats pastures. #Energy
Obviously you would mix solar with wind, hydro, nuclear, and storage in a real system.

TIL that frontotemporal dementia sufferers have only 7-13 years of productive life after diagnosis (up to 20 years total, including hospitalization). I also learned that habitual ketamine users often die of overdoses due to their bodies adjusting to the effects, but not being able to handle the doses required to later achieve a high. Both FTD and ketamine addiction are exacerbated by high pressure environments.

The biggest question, I think, for Carney's leadership is messaging. Trudeau was notoriously terrible at it, which he himself admitted recently. Will Carney improve on this? Will his advisors have their fingers on the pulse of how Canadians *actually* respond rather than how people with their specific experiences would respond?

@nprofile…02ud @nprofile…xzu0 To add to that, the outgoing PM, Justin Trudeau left due to an unrelenting attack via social media and the very simplistic sloganeering of the leader of the Conservative Party. There is plenty of reason to believe that the social media attacks are funded by right-wing Americans. For example, when the US was blocked by TikTok, right-wing comments disappeared during that period. During the right-wing supporting occupation of Ottawa in 2022, roughly half the donations to the occupiers seemed to come from the US. Add to this the partisan endorsements by Trump, Musk, and other notable rightwing Americans after decades of non-interference.
The Liberal Party is a supporter of capitalism, but it also supports public healthcare, welfare, senior support, child support, full women autonomy over their bodies, LGBTQA, and personal liberty. The new leader, elected Sunday, was the governor of both the Bank of Canada during the mortgage crisis of 2018, and the Bank of England just prior to and through Brexit (he cautioned against Brexit). He has also written a popular book on the monetary system and beyond, "Value(s), Building a Better World for All". He was elected in the belief that he would be best suited to weather the coming storm brought by Trump. His two main opponents were highly experienced women who were both excellent candidates, but I feel that voters were concerned how Trump's open misogyny would affect any negotiations.
The third major party, the New Democrat Party, is akin to traditional Labour parties. Unfortunately there are voters who remember the NDP origins as a communism-supporting party which limits their support. The Liberals and NDP together regularly get ⅔rds of the vote, but sometimes the Conservatives can pull enough votes from the Liberals to win the national election and form government.

A recent study at UBC in Vancouver found that when plant leaves get to hot, they lose water through the waxy layer on top of their leaves (the cuticle), which is there to stop stop water loss. This temperature depends on the plant, but likely between 40 and 50℃. It's not clear from my read as to how long the damage lasts.
This affects the moisture in the plant, but also the water cycle and could exacerbate flooding downwind from forests and grasslands.

Good list of what to expect price rises for, coming from the US. Lots of grocery items, but most of them can come from Mexico and other tropical and sub-tropical countries, or from within Canada. I discovered we lose a ton of heat in the winter via our balcony, that we gain a ton of heat in the summer via our hot water tank, and could locate where to access the shower valve from the kitchen. Also handy for tracking down our cats.

@nprofile…0hn2 I only have a single ceramic-coated pan for eggs, which is safer than Teflon and its relatives. I ordered an inexpensive commercial carbon steel pan yesterday and I'm looking forward to trying it out as my most used pan. You can't do tomato sauces in cast iron or carbon steel pans, so I will still use my stainless steel from time to time. The cast iron pan is used for roasting and pan pizzas.

@nprofile…48vs On the one hand, spreading the radon-producing waste out into a thin layer will allow off gassing in a far safer concentration with wind carrying it away. On the other, there's no real way to filter it as you drive on it and you might still get cancer-causing doses. And the Radon decays to Polonium, which is itself dangerous. @nprofile…rtmv I had a separate Dolby noise reduction system for my TEAC reel-to-reel, and when using metal tape at 2x recording speed, it was completely indistinguishable from source. It was glorious, but a bit expensive for my budget. It had a rated 40 kHz range, and I believe it.

@nprofile…ysde In Canada our Treasury Board sets the standard for security for the entire government, and so in theory should be pretty secure. Implementation falls to a central agency, and so should be pretty consistent. And yet, in any sufficiently complex information system, there will always be holes for the sufficiently determined adversary. #infosec #CanPoli #CdnPoli
