We have just had an office refurb and got some extra meeting rooms. Which now need names. Someone suggested mountains. I said great idea and suggested Eyjafjallajökull as a mountain to name a meeting room after.

Am on a train heading to Limburg. A friend called asking if I could come help them with some urgency. So I threw some clothes on, took a metro to a station and got on the first train heading where I need to go. Fortunately they run every 30 mins on this route (I'd prefer every 15). There was no planning to this trip. It is totally spontaneous cos of need. Fortunately cos this is the Netherlands I could just turn up and get on the train. I didn't need to book. I could just swipe a card, & go

From the no shit sherlock school of research. Being poor is exhausting and debilitating. It's amazing the difference even small amounts of money can have on someone's mental health.
So of course, having enough money to be able to put a small amount of it aside is going to make you feel a lot better than being worried that you might not be able to afford food this week.
Poverty costs the UK £78Bn a year. Maybe we should use some of that to lift people out of poverty

Looks like we have new COVID waves happening facilitated by super spreader events like the sports ball in Germany, and some big concerts at various venues.
A few years back we were told that we need to learn to live with covid.
Which is true. But not in the way that our political class seems to think (let the week die and carry on as normal). It means changing our built environment and the way we act. This video is a great example of how to do ventilation right.

Rewatching Firefly. The theme song brought a tear to my eye. India measuring temperatures over 52°C. We had 43°C a couple of years ago and it was unbearable. The idea of 10° more doesn't bear thinking about.
Temps are going up, and with water scarcity increasing out ability to deal with it is gonna diminish even more. Millions are gonna die.

There's a lot of discussion among coders about comments, some say that good code shouldn't need commenting.
But the thing a lot of people fail to understand with comments is that you don't just want to say what th code is doing. But why. The why is often more important. I have a code base I've taken over maintenance of, and in the execution there's a 60 second delay in there. But there's no details of why. What breaks if I remove it? Do I want to find out the hardway?

Finally. Friend grabs their bag and makes way through the train. Only to find 14 other doctors had done the same thing...
Guess that route is popular with medical staff on their way to work...

One of the big advantages of the UNIX model of small tools, each built to do one thing, and so it well, is it's easy for one person to keep on top of the code base for that tool. Modern codebases measured in the millions of lines of code, are impossible for anyone to fully grasp. Systemd is 1.3m loc, which is bonkers, but the chrome code base is 35m. It's impossible for anyone person to have any real oversight of what most of that code is doing.
Our codebases are just far far too complicated.
